action

The 45-year-old physiotherapist Franziska goes to the doctor because of alleged menopausal symptoms and learns that she is pregnant. Before she can tell her husband Andreas the news, he separates from her because he can no longer cope with her need to be tidy and controlled.

She decides to have an abortion and meets the lively and talented 20-year-old life artist Lilli in the counseling center. She is also pregnant, but even if she is currently homeless and stays in her studio, she wants to have her child. One day, when she is at Franziska's door, she takes the young chaotic girl into her squeaky clean house for a while.

Although the two women could hardly be more different, they slowly become friends and become irreplaceable supports for each other. Lilli's life-affirming manner makes Franziska rethink her so that she can decide in favor of the child, and Franziska's strengths in spelling and other formal things help Lilli apply to an art college.

Reviews

Daniel Haas from FAZ assumes that ARD conceives productions so that they can be “didactically, feministically and demographically comprehensively applicable” and criticizes: “One speculates on socio-political significance, but remains narrative below the cut”. Director Steurer misunderstood "his subject: compulsions are actually a pathological scourge (...)".

The actresses are not challenged enough, but despite the “awkwardness of the script”, the “acting performance reaches Oscar level”, especially Riemann's “elegantly stoic play”.

Tittelbach.tv calls Small Ships an "extremely entertaining" film. The script concentrates on “characterful situations and lively dialogues”, the direction relies on “Tempo & Timing” and the leading actresses harmonized very well with each other.

Awards

Aylin Tezel won the German Actor Award for best actress in a comedic role in 2015 for her performance in this film drama . At the Jupiter Film Awards 2014, the film was nominated for “Best TV Feature Film” of the year.
