location

The Kleine Brocken is located within the Upper Harz (Hochharz) in the Harz National Park and in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park . Its summit is located around 12 km west-southwest of Wernigerode , 7.5 km southwest of Ilsenburg , 2.6 km south-south-east of the Scharfenstein ( 697.6  m ) and 1.3 km (as the crow flies ) north-northwest of the Brocken summit. Its spring-rich flanks fall to the east into the Ilse valley and to the west into that of the Ecker , which flows through the Eckerstausee in the northwest .

Natural allocation

The Kleine Brocken belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Harz (No. 38) and in the main unit Hochharz (381) to the subunit Brocken ( Eastern Brocken massif ; 381.0).

Protected areas

In addition to its central location in the Harz National Park, parts of the Harz landscape protection area and northern Harz foreland ( CDDA no. 20784; designated in 1968; 1587.6238  km² in size), the Hochharz fauna-flora-habitat area (FFH no. 4229-301; 60.23 km²) and the Hochharz bird sanctuary (VSG no. 4229-401; 61.12 km²).

Landscape image

The Kleine Brocken does not have a pronounced peak. Its highest point is on a gently undulating mountain ridge that runs steeply from the Brocken, over the Kleiner Brocken, towards the Scharfenstein. It is forested and covered with granite rocks. To the north is the Bismarck cliff and a little to the northwest below it is the Hermannsklippe .

hike

A little west past the summit of the Kleiner Brocken , the steep Hirtenstieg leads on an old slab path that was laid out to control the former inner-German border that runs a little further to the west . On the way there is the last resting place near the summit before the main summit of the Brocken , which with its distinctive structures can be clearly seen from there during a break in the ascent. To the east past its summit , the historic Heinrich-Heine hiking trail runs through a quiet zone of the national park, including the Ilsetal and the Bremer Hütte ; The 10.5 km long path was named in honor of the German poet Heinrich Heine , who ran this route in September 1824 on his descent from the Brocken. From the Kleiner Brocken, if visibility is good, you can also see far into the northern Harz foreland.
