Klek ( Serbian - Cyrillic Клек , Romanian Clec , Hungarian Begafő , also Klekk ) is a place in the Serbian Banat and belongs to the administrative area of the city of Zrenjanin .
history
After the withdrawal of the Ottoman Empire, Danube Swabians began to settle the banks of the Danube and founded the "old" Klek in 1766 on a marsh area between the Bega and Temesch rivers . They managed agricultural land and began the cultivation of corn , sugar beet , hemp , tobacco , sunflower , poppy and additional vegetables and fruits .
Due to repeated flooding of the place, the old village was finally abandoned and re-established around 1818 on the site of today's Klek.
Descendants of Klek's first settlers lived in the village until the end of World War II . After the defeat of the Axis powers , the majority of the German community fled for fear of acts of revenge or were expelled. Most of the settlers returned to Germany after more than 150 years , as a result of which the once very large and influential community of the Danube Swabians in the West Banat has almost completely disappeared.
