description
The first order trigonometric point on the Kulpenberg was a 3.7 m high sandstone column with the inscription “Königl. Prussian regional triangulation 1879 ” with a wooden viewing platform built above it. Since the closed high forest prevented any view from the platform, the mountain was hardly visited until the opening of the 94 m high Kulpenberg television tower with two viewing platforms, which was built between 1959 and 1964 near the sandstone column . The sandstone column was restored by the Thuringian Land Surveyor's Office in 1999 on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the Royal Prussian Triangulation from 1879 .
