Kurt Josef Karl Theodor Sieder (born September 23, 1899 in Mannheim ; † September 28, 1964 in Bonn ) was a German theater director and founder of the Grenzlandtheater Aachen .

Live and act

The son of the music director Wilhelm Sieder and the actress Elisabeth Sieder, b. De Lank, after completing his school days, first completed an apprenticeship in a bank and then switched to drama school. After several stops in between, Sieder received an engagement as an actor and co-director at the Nürnberg-Fürther-Kammerspiele. He got his first marriage in Nuremberg in 1921.

During the Second World War he was drafted as an officer in the Air Force and in 1944 met his second wife Gerda (1916–2002), a native of Aachen and a trained singer, who sang chansons and operettas on a front stage . The two married that same year.

In the summer of 1945 Sieder was appointed to the Aachen city theater to reorganize the theater after the end of the war. Because of the war-related damage to the theater building, he had to resort to alternatives for the office as well as for the rehearsal and performance rooms, such as the Aachen City Library . He was supported by his wife Gerda as well as by a small group of like-minded artists who initially only appeared in the theater for an equivalent value in "natural produce", such as food, coffee or tobacco, and at the same time for business people, entrepreneurs and prominent private individuals Reconstruction of the theater solicited grants.

Sieder stayed at the theater for almost a year and then moved to another institution for a few years before returning to Aachen in 1950. Here he founded a room theater , which he converted a year later into a GmbH together with the then Aachen district and other shareholders . It was completely taken over by the district in 1956 and renamed Grenzlandtheater Aachen in 1962 . Kurt Sieder established the theater, designed for 200 spectators, which from 1956 found its venue in what was then Nuellens-Passage and today's Elisengalerie opposite the Elisenbrunnen , during his management as a fixture in Aachen's cultural landscape and managed it until his death. Sieder repeatedly presented prominent guests such as Lil Dagover and René Deltgen . The commitment of director Veit Harlan for the 1962/63 season, who directed the anti-Semitic film Jud Suss , was classified as a scandal and bad planning. After massive protests, Sieder wanted to unload Harlan, but Harlan won his job in court.

Kurt Sieder ran the theater until his sudden death in 1964. A few years later, at the age of 24, his only son also died in an accident. Gerda Sieder remained connected to the Grenzlandtheater for life.

Kurt Sieder Prize

After Kurt Sieder's untimely death, his widow Gerda initiated the formation of the Kurt Sieder Foundation while she was still alive, into which her private assets, including her private house in Aachen-Brand, flowed as the sole heir. This foundation was supposed to award the Kurt Sieder Prize for outstanding acting achievements each year to one member of the ensemble of the Stadttheater and the Grenzlandtheater. The prize is endowed with 2000 euros per person and is awarded by an external five-person board of trustees. The Kurt Sieder Prize was first awarded for the 2003/04 season.
