Kurt "Ricki" Ruchholz (born March 14, 1925 in Peenemünde ; † August 14, 2008 ) was a German geologist and professor of general and regional geology at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald .

Life

Kurt Ruchholz attended grammar school in Franzburg , but was only able to take his Abitur in 1947 because he was drafted as a pilot in the Air Force in 1944 until the end of World War II . After graduation Ruchholz began at the University of Greifswald education in the subjects of geography and biology to study. The final thesis in pedagogy in 1950 dealt with the Baltic Ordovician . In the same year Kurt Ruchholz switched to geology and was a student of Walter Schriel and Serge von Bubnoff , his later scientific mentor . In 1951 he received a scheduled aspiration . His diploma thesis in 1953 dealt with a tectonic topic in the area of the Elbingerode limestone complex in the Harz Mountains : the storage conditions on the northern flank of the Büchenberg saddle in the Harz Mountains . In 1956 he did his doctorate under Walter Schriel on scree investigations in the Lower Devonian Harz Mountains . As a student, Kurt Ruchholz began to take on teaching tasks in the field of general geology , later courses in the historical and regional geology of Europe and the Earth were added.

In 1960 he received a lectureship in general geology and stratigraphy at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University. The habilitation in 1961 also dealt with a topic of Harz geology: The younger Herzyn of the middle Harzgerode fold zone and west of Wernigerode and its position in the lower and middle Devon of the Harz. Ruchholz was to remain connected to the geology of the Harz until his retirement in 1990. He mainly dealt with the issues of stratigraphy, facies and tectonics of the rocks of the Eastern Harz. Another focus of his scientific work was the research of young sediment bodies on the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania coast and the recent coastal dynamics. From 1964 until his retirement, Ruchholz was head of the chair for general and regional geology at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University. After Hans Wehrli retired in 1967, Ruchholz became director of the Geological-Paleontological Institute and Mineralogical-Petrographic Institute and the soil science working group at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University.

As part of the third university reform in 1968/1969, Ruchholz campaigned intensively for the geology department to remain at Greifswald University. In 1968 he was appointed full professor for lithology and formation theory and in 1985 as full professor for regional geology.

In addition to his professional skills, Kurt Ruchholz was highly valued by employees and students, “because he did not allow himself to be corrupted by the GDR system within the scope of his possibilities and always stood up for his employees”.

Kurt Ruchholz was a member of the Geological Society of the GDR, on whose board he was also active between 1962 and 1966.

In addition, Kurt “Ricki” Ruchholz is considered a sponsor of the student singing movement at the University of Greifswald.

Kurt Ruchholz was buried in the cemetery in Ückeritz after his death in 2008 .
