Location of Löbsal in Saxony

Löbsal Castle Hill

Löbsal is a district of the municipality of Diera-Zehren in the district of Meißen in Saxony with around 30 inhabitants.

The first written mention of the place, which emerged from a Slavic settlement, dates back to 1277.

Löbsal, located on the castle hill on the right bank of the Elbe above Diesbar , is a wine-growing and recreational area with more guest beds than residents. It is considered one of the Elbe wine villages .

Worth mentioning is a prehistoric fortified settlement from the Bronze Age (1800 BC) on a mountain spur near Löbsal (Burgberg). In the partially preserved earth wall, remains of a castle wall with a half-timbered building made of wood and earth can be detected. Recent research on the medieval Liubusua castle mentioned by Thietmar von Merseburg has shown that his descriptions refer to the castle on the Rauhen Furt north of Meissen directly on the Elbe, which was destroyed in 932, and that Liubusua must be identical to the medieval castle wall near Löbsal.

Early modern coin treasure

On January 10, 2007, two volunteer monument conservationists found a treasure in the Meissen district. On behalf of the State Office for Archeology of Saxony, they explored a field near the municipality of Löbsal for surface finds and came across a treasure trove of coins. Most of the pieces were close together and beneath the surface of the fallow field. Furthermore, shards of two ceramic vessels were recovered.

A total of 154 coins were found, including five gold coins. The ducats are from Emperor Ferdinand III. , from the imperial city of Frankfurt, from Geldern and Utrecht . However, the majority are the 148 silver coins, including Taler and valleys cuts, dimes , three, Mariengroschen , Prague pennies , Maleygroschen, Patagone and a quarter Patagone. There was also a baptismal penny minted in Saalfeld , which belonged to Johannes Möller, who was born on March 9, 1599.
