The former French hamlet or Lieu-dit La Mort aux Juifs (in German roughly: (The) death to the Jews or Where Jews died ) in the Loiret department , about twelve kilometers east of Montargis , consisted of a farm and a handful of houses. It belonged to the municipality of Courtemaux and has not been signposted with signposts since 1990. Since the end of 2014, the hamlet has been divided into the districts of Les Croisilles and La Dogetterie .

history

According to a first documentary mention, the hamlet is already on the Cassini map (around 1757). A nobleman, Messire Pierre Ozon, lord of La Mort aux Juifs, is attested there in the late 17th century. The place name was already the subject of heated discussions in the 1990s. Today there is no place name sign pointing to the hamlet after the residents removed it in 1990. The name is still used in the cadastre . In August 2014, the Simon Wiesenthal Center came across the name “La Mort aux Juifs” in real estate advertisements and then complained to the French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve . It now calls for the town to be renamed.

Naming

La Mort aux Juifs, Carte de Cassini, ca.1757

According to the local historical tradition, different versions of the origin of the name are told: There is a hypothesis from the 19th century that it was a decree of King John II , which was signed on July 18, 1353 in Chantecoq Castle, just five miles away and in a possible connection to the memory of a pogrom . Furthermore, according to the French historian Pierre Miquel, there is another link from history, namely the mention of the place as a marked paying office called “Le Marc-aux-Juif”, which corresponded to a toll worth a silver stamp at the time. The officer who proposed this is said to have been a Jew, or Jewish traders should have paid the toll. Finally, some contemporaries consider the designation "La Mare (Marais) des Juifs" ("The pond of the Jews" or "The morass, swamp of the Jews") to be probable, considering that an anti-Semitic connotation in connection with a folk etymology is possible has been.

In any case, the original name idea from the Middle Ages with the word “Mort” (death) was not chosen deliberately so that it could be associated with a possible genocide. More likely a pond or a swamp was meant.

A possible renaming to “la mare aux geais” (The pond of the jays) should be decided at a municipal council meeting in September 2014. Only this body is authorized to change the name.

A councilor from Courtemaux, to which the hamlet belongs, said:

“A previous local council had already rejected the renaming of this locality at least twenty years ago. It's ridiculous, that name has always existed. Nobody wants anything to the Jews, that's for sure. And I'm not surprised that this story is back on the carpet. A name change needs a decision from the local council, but I would be surprised if it were. Why change a name that dates back to the Middle Ages? We have to respect these old names. "

Recent development

After the Simon Wiesenthal Center intervened , Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve promised to follow up on the matter and to ensure that the name was changed. At his instigation, the sub-prefect Paul Laville arranged for the local council to be convened at the end of September 2014. However, this did not come to a decision. At another meeting in early December 2014, a name change was rejected. As a result, the sub-prefect threatened to sue the municipality before the administrative court if the municipal council did not take a decision in the interests of the interior minister within three days. On the occasion of a hastily convened meeting, the local council decided to delete the name La Mort-aux-Juifs and replace it with the names of the neighboring hamlets of Les Croisilles and La Dogetterie .

The Maire Michel Vouette stated again that the name had in no way an anti-Semitic sound to the locals, but that the historical legacy was wanted to be preserved, to which this place name belongs.

Similar case

There was a similar case in the village of Castrillo Matajudíos ("Castrillo kills Jews") in northern Spain . Since 1627 the place held the name. In a vote parallel to the 2014 European elections , 29 out of 56 people entitled to vote opted for a new name and 19 against. Since then the place has been called "Mota Judios" ("Jew hill").
