The phylloxera crisis in viticulture, the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms led to a decline in the number of inhabitants by the middle of the 20th century; afterwards these rose again significantly. The hamlet (pedanía) Salinillas de Buradón, which still has around 100 inhabitants, also belongs to the municipality .

economy

In the early centuries, the self-sufficient residents lived mainly from the agricultural products of the surrounding area, including wine. The place itself functioned as a market and trade center, but craftsmen also settled here. The increasing importance of viticulture and wine tourism in the Rioja has had a positive effect on employment again in recent decades.

history

Celts , Romans , Visigoths and Moors - despite the proximity to the Ebro Valley - left no archaeologically usable traces on the municipal area. The place probably first arose in the course of recapturing ( reconquista ) and resettlement ( repoblación ) of the occupied territories from the Moors in the 10th and 11th centuries. Around the year 1200 there were repeated clashes between the Kingdom of Navarre and the Castilian crown , in which Castile retained the upper hand despite ongoing conflicts. Ferdinand III. granted the place Labastida privileges ( fueros ) in 1242 . In 1379 King Henry II of Castile enfeoffed Marshal Diego Gómez Sarmiento with the places Labastida and Salinillas de Buradón, which today also belongs to the municipality. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Labastida experienced decades of calm and prosperity.

Attractions

Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Church
Town hall ( Casa consistorial )
  • The oldest building is the Ermita del Santo Cristo , a little outside and above the town , in which both late Romanesque elements (e.g. in the archivolt portal ) and late Gothic components (e.g. apse window ) can be seen.
  • Only a few meters above the Ermita is the Arco de Toloño , a renaissance gate in the city wall with a figure of the Mother of God .
  • The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción , built in the Renaissance style , was built in the 16th century and consecrated at the beginning of the 17th century; the furnishing with several altarpieces , however, comes mainly from the Baroque period . The architectural highlight of the building is the dome with an oculus above the frescoed crossing . The gilded altarpiece (retablo) in the main apse is designed in the late Baroque style of Churriguerism ; its middle field is occupied by a group of sculptures of the Assumption of Mary (asunción) accompanied by angels .
  • The Town Hall (Casa consistorial) is located in a two-storey 18th century building whose facade with antique-style elements such kanelierte pillars and metopes - triglyph below the eaves notice. The ground floor is opened by arcades ; on the upper floor there are three balconies with lavishly framed windows, each of which is covered by small round windows ( oculi ) and arches. The hipped tiled roof is barely visible as it is surrounded by a balustrade with vase attachments.
  • The nearby two-storey Palacio de los Salazar , also from the 18th century, was restored at the end of the 20th century and now serves as a tourist office and cultural center.
  • The Palacio de los Paternina is a broad building from the 17th century with three balconies. Inside there is a hall (zaguán) and an inner courtyard (patio), which is well worth seeing .

Salinillas de Buradón

  • About 5 km north-west is still in parts of a late medieval city walls (muralla) Surrounded place Salinillas de Buradón (Basque: Gatzaga ). Interesting, but unfortunately largely destroyed, is the two-storey Palacio de los Condes de Oñate , dating from the 15th century , to which the three-storey Torre de los Sarmientos y los Ayalas also belongs.
