Ladislau Șimon

Ladislau Șimon , actually László Simon , (born September 25, 1951 in Târgu Mureş ; † May 12, 2005 ) was a Romanian wrestler . He was world champion in 1974 and winner of the bronze medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in super heavyweight free style .

Career

Ladislau Șimon began as a teenager in 1966 with Mureșul Târgu Mureș with the wrestling. He developed into an excellent freestyle wrestler who was already a fully developed super heavyweight at the age of 18, this weight class started at 100 kg body weight.

As early as 1969 he took part in international tournaments, first with the juniors and then with the seniors with great success. He made his first start at an international championship in 1973 at the European championship in Lausanne . However, he lost the two fights he had to contest there and ended up in 6th place thanks to a bye in the 1st round. By the 1973 World Cup in Tehran , which took place a few months after the European Championship, Ladislau Șimon had developed enormously. He was able to win three fights in Tehran and took 3rd place after defeats against Bojan Boew from Bulgaria and Soslan Andijew from the Soviet Union . He won his first medal at an international championship. Soslan Andiev became his main competitor at the Olympic Games, World and European Championships in the next few years.

The next year, 1974, Ladislau Șimon won another medal at the European Championships in Madrid. He came 3rd in the super heavyweight division after three wins in Madrid. He lost u. a. again against the Soviet master Soslan Andijew. At the 1974 World Cup in Istanbul , Ladislau Șimon faced Soslan Andijew in the final battle. He achieved a sensational victory over Andijew. Since he had previously defeated all of his other opponents, among them were u. a. Heinz Eichelbaum from Germany , Bojan Boew from Bulgaria a. Michael McCready from the USA , Ladislau Șimon was world champion by defeating Andijew . To this day he is the only Romanian who could become world champion in freestyle wrestling.

At the European Championships in 1975 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , Ladislau defeated Șimon u. a. the strong Bulgarian champion Marin Gertschew . In the fight against the Hungarian József Balla he was put off the mat for passivity. He still got the chance to fight for the championship against Soslan Andijew. However, he was able to return the favor to Șimon for the defeat he had suffered at the World Cup last year and won this fight. Lasislau Șimon took 3rd place.

At the 1975 World Cup in Minsk , he lost his first two fights against József Balla and Soslan Andijew and was eliminated early. He only got 10th place.

Ladislau Șimon was very successful again in 1976. He started in the spring at the European Championships in Leningrad . He won against Heinz Eichelbaum , Marin Gertschew, József Balla and Roland Gehrke from the GDR . However, he lost the fight against Boris Bigajew from the USSR. However, since this was beaten by Roland Gehrke, who in turn had defeated Șimon, the results of the preliminary fights had to be used to determine the winner and European champion and here Ladislau Șimon was the best. He was thus European champion ahead of Roland Gehrke and Boris Bigajew.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , Ladislau Șimon faced Soslan Andijew again. He lost to this and also to József Balla, but three wins he had achieved before were enough for him to win the Olympic bronze medal in the super heavyweight division.

Ladislau Șimon also competed in the international championships in 1977 and 1978. However, he did not succeed in winning medals again. After the 1978 World Cup in Mexico City , where he only finished in a disappointing 10th place, he resigned because of this.

He already studied during his active time at the Institutul de Educație Fizică și Sport in Bucharest and graduated in 1981. From 1979 he was a coach at his hometown club Mureșul. He then coached the Romanian junior national freestyle wrestling team from 1982 to 1985 and was the coach of the Romanian national freestyle wrestling team from 1994 to 2000. He then retired.

Others

Șimon died of a stroke on May 12, 2005 . He received honorary citizenship from his hometown of Târgu Mureș in 2005 after his death . Since then, the Romanian Wrestling Association has presented the winner of the national championships in the heavyweight division with the Ladislau-Șimon trophy every year. His son is also called Ladislau and is now himself a trainer at Mureșul Târgu Mureș.
