Lampe & Schwartze KG is a German insurance company based in Bremen that acts as an insurance broker. In addition to transport insurance, Lampe & Schwartze also offers industrial, commercial and personal insurance. The owner-managed company was created in 1998 through the merger of two long-established Bremen insurance companies . It is one of the "ten largest insurance companies in Germany".

history

The insurance company Lampe & Schierenbeck was founded as a private insurer in Bremen in 1858 . The main focus of the insurance business was initially the marine insurance industry, and since 1928 property insurance for trade and industry was increasingly added.

In 1908, the insurance company Buse & Schwartze was also founded in Bremen , with a focus on insurance in the coffee and food sector.

In 1998 the two underwriters merged to form Lampe & Schwartze KG . In 2000, the long-established underwriting company Bartels & Lüth oHG was taken over. The other subsidiaries of the Lampe & Schwartze Group include Bremer Nordwest Assekuranzmakler GmbH & Co. KG and Roland Offshore Versicherungsagentur GmbH & Co KG .

2004 Lampe & Schwartze was instrumental in the settlement of claims of damage of the cruise ship Pride of America in Bremerhaven Lloyd Werft for the German and international reinsurance market involved. The accident, which resulted in bankruptcy proceedings for the shipyard, "caused damage of around 170 million euros, making it the largest transport insurance damage in Germany".

Since April 2011 until today, Lampe & Schwartze has been in charge of the operational and administrative management of the German War Cover consortium , which, as a consortium , is offering insurance protection for cargo ships against damage from war , piracy and terrorism for the first time by German insurance companies .

Since the beginning of 2019, Lampe & Schwartze has been offering its own cyber insurance for shipping companies , which covers “damage as a result of malicious attacks” and, in particular, “ cyber attacks on IT systems ” on ships or shipping company fleets. The special insurance solution for shipowners is supported by direct insurers and reinsurance companies.

The company's headquarters is located in Bremen in the office buildings of the so-called Insurance Exchange , which in the Bremen district of Neustadt belonging Teerhof is located, a peninsula between the Weser and the Kleine Weser.

The insurance company is currently (2019) managed by five personally liable partners ( general partners ): Hans-Christoph Enge, André Grobien, Thomas Haukje, Arne Klarmann and Patrick Wendisch . Wendisch has been with the company since 1985.

profile

After the business volume had "grown significantly" in the 2000s, the company reorganized itself in 2010 and made a "clearer separation" of the "two key business areas  - marine underwriting and insurance brokerage -":

The Lampe & Schwartze Marine Underwriting specializes in marine insurance; it is considered the largest German underwriter for transport insurance and is one of the leading underwriters in Europe. In 2010, for example, the company represented more than 25 German and foreign insurance companies as an underwriter for hull damage, goods transport and all kinds of transport liability. In the same year, more than 2,000 ships with a market value (“taxe”) of around 50 billion US dollars were insured as well as a large number of global goods transports, especially from international commodity traders .

The insurance brokerage division looks after industrial, commercial and private customers in Bremen as well as in the north-west and throughout Germany. The company, which acts as a multiple agency, negotiates insurance conditions with providers on behalf of customers and advises on risk prevention, with a focus on industrial and technical insurance. The Lampe & Schwartze Assekuranzvermittlung was entrusted with the insurance of navigation satellites, hydraulic engineering and infrastructure projects, among other things.
