District of Leipe (West Pr.)

The district of Leipe (Western Pr.) Existed between 1939 and 1945 in occupied Poland . In 1941 it had: 106,562 inhabitants and on January 1, 1945 included the two cities of Leipe ( Lipno ) and Dobrin ad Weichsel ( Dobrzyń nad Wisłą ) and 215 other communities.

Administrative history

The Lipno County belonged to Poland until 1939 . After the German invasion of Poland , the then Polish district of Lipno became part of the newly formed Reichsgau West Prussia - later Gdansk-West Prussia - in the Marienwerder district on October 26, 1939 . On June 25, 1942, the name of the district was changed to Leipe (West Pr.). In the spring of 1945 the district was occupied by the Red Army and came back to Poland.

After the attack on Poland , the city of Leipe (Westpr.) Was subject to the German municipal code of January 30, 1935, which was valid in the Altreich and provided for the enforcement of the Führer principle at the municipal level. The city of Dobrin ad Weichsel and the other communities were grouped together in administrative districts .

Place names

Due to an unpublished decree of December 29, 1939, the previous Polish place names continued to apply.

With the "Order concerning the change of place names" of the Reich Governor in Danzig-West Prussia of June 25, 1942, all place names were Germanized with the consent of the Reich Minister of the Interior. The new place names were created through phonetic alignment or translation, for example:

  • Chalin: Hallingen,
  • Dobrzejewice: Godenfeld,
  • Dobrzyn: Dobrin ad Vistula,
  • Kikol: Kickelsee,
  • Ligowo: Ligau,
  • Lipno: Leipe (Western Pr.),
  • Mazowsze: Massau,
  • Nowogrod: Neugard,
  • Ossowka: aspen,
  • Skepe: Schemmensee,
  • Czernikowo: Schwarzendorf,
  • Szpetal: Spittelberg,
  • Tluchowo: Tülchau,
  • Wielgie: Wilgen.
