Damp and wet meadows can be found mainly in the northern part of the former river marsh . The breeding birds there are lapwing , black godwit and redshank , "whose occurrence gives the Rheiderland the importance of an outstanding breeding area for meadow birds in Lower Saxony".

The Rheiderland is of national and international importance as a resting place for migratory birds such as golden plover , curlew , whimbrel and lapwing, as well as a wintering area for Nordic geese such as white , barnacle and gray geese .

Other occurring in the territory of birds include Zwerggans , short-eared owl , red-breasted goose , white stork , marsh harrier , hen harrier , Montagu's Harrier , corncrake , Tundra Swan , backed Shrike , Bluethroat , Ruff , Avocet , Tern , sedge warbler , shoveler , wigeon , mallard , teal , pink-footed goose , bean goose , Gray Heron , Pochard , Tufted duck , Brent goose , Canada goose , Rook , snipe , oystercatcher , common gull , herring gull , black-headed gull , Goosander and Whimbrel .
