In the 2017 election, the Progressive Citizens' Party in Liechtenstein (FBP) won a relative majority. Together with the Fatherland Union (VU), it formed a government. Adrian Hasler became head of government . He announced that he would no longer be available for office in 2021. During the legislative period , one member ( Johannes Kaiser ) resigned from the FBP parliamentary group, which meant that it lost its majority within the coalition.

In 2018, the Democrats for Liechtenstein (DPL) were founded from three resigned MPs from the Independent (you ). These formed the new parliamentary group (NF), while the remaining two deputies of the independents became non-attached, as three deputies were required for a parliamentary group.

Parties and candidates

The five parties previously represented in the state parliament are running for election with a record number of 75 candidates (23 women and 52 men) for the 25 seats. For the first time, the two governing parties nominated fewer candidates than seats were available in both constituencies. The VU has 22 candidates, the FBP 20, the DPL 16, the FL 12 and the DU 5.

The incumbent head of government Adrian Hasler (FBP) and government councilor Mauro Pedrazzini (FBP) decided not to run again after eight years. With Sabine Monauni, the FBP nominated a woman for the first time as head of government candidate . She nominated Katrin Eggenberger (previously) and Manuel Frick as further candidates for the government . Deputy Prime Minister Daniel Risch is the head of government candidate for VU , Dominique Hasler (so far) and Graziella Moroccan-Wachter complete the government candidate team . In contrast to 2017, the Free List waived the nomination of a government candidate. Traditionally, the government candidates themselves are not eligible for election to the state parliament, but are usually taken into account when forming a government.
