The oak-hornbeam forest Laubenbuch near Rothenstein is a nature reserve in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in Bavaria .
The area is located between Weißenburg and Eichstätt in the Raitenbuch district , about 500 m north of Rothenstein , near the federal highway 13 .
The forest located on the western edge of the Raitenbucher forest on the Jura plateau is a testimony to historical forest management in the form of a medium forest . On the one hand, strong oaks were planted for construction and furniture wood production and on the other hand hornbeams were brought in as undergrowth , which promoted the growth quality of the oaks. The acorns were used for fattening pigs in autumn and the hornbeams were used as firewood. Today the crowns of the oaks provide a habitat for many animal and plant species. The high proportion of old and dead wood also contributes to this. Birds in particular find a habitat there, the middle woodpecker has a distribution focus here.
An educational trail with information boards leads around the nature reserve.
