Legion is an American apocalyptic fantasy thriller from 2010 directed by Scott Charles Stewart . Stewart wrote the script together with Peter Schink .

action

On December 23rd, the Archangel Michael comes to earth, in the middle of the city of Los Angeles. There he cuts off his wings, loots a weapons store and steals a police car. He makes his way to Paradise Falls , a fast food restaurant with a gas station and workshop near the Mojave Desert .

The Paradise Falls belongs Bob Hanson, who lives there with his son Jeep and it operates together with the chef Percy and Pregnant Operation Charlie. Jeep is in love with Charlie, the father of her baby is unknown. Jeep also has nightmares in which she recurs and he feels responsible for them.

By chance, a man named Kyle stops at the fast food restaurant and meets the couple Howard and Sandra Anderson and their daughter Audrey. When the television, radio, and phone fail, fast food people start to worry. The next guest to enter the bar is an old woman who suddenly mutates into a monster and Howard bites a piece of meat from his neck, whereupon Kyle shoots her with his pistol because Jeep cannot bring himself to pull the trigger. The attempt to drive Howard to the nearest hospital fails, as huge swarms of flies are flying towards them from two directions, which from a distance still looked like storm clouds. The people in the pub have to find that they are isolated from the outside world.

Michael has meanwhile arrived at Paradise Falls and explains the situation: Since God has had enough of the bad behavior of people, he wants to send his angels to earth as an army of destruction and usher in the downfall of people. But before that, Charlie's unborn baby must also be killed, as this is supposed to be the savior of humanity. Michael's job was to kill the baby, but unlike God, he has not yet lost faith in humanity and has therefore resisted God's commission.

The following night, hundreds of people possessed by the angels of God arrive in vehicles and try to storm the building to get the baby. In a wild shootout, the first onslaught can be repelled, but the next time an angel takes hold of a child's body. While trying to save the supposedly harmless child, Kyle is killed by him.

Meanwhile, Charlie's child is born. Michael explains to Jeep that he sees him as the child's true protector and implores that the child must survive whatever the circumstances. Shortly afterwards, trumpets herald the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel , who does not question God's command to kill the child and instead accuses Michael of disobedience. He kills Michael and the remaining people, only Jeep, Charlie and Audrey can escape with the child in a car. But Gabriel catches up with them, and after a scuffle in the car, the vehicle overturns, killing Audrey. Jeep and Charlie flee to a hill, where Gabriel confronts them and demands the child's surrender. He can't understand that Jeep still wants to keep fighting when all hope seems lost. At the last moment, however, Michael, who was killed as a mortal, returns as an angel and stands between the survivors and Gabriel. Gabriel is confused and does not understand why God has obviously forgiven Michael for his insubordination. Michael explains that Gabriel gave God what he wanted, but he, Michael, gave him what God needed. God is disappointed in Gabriel because he blindly carried out his unjust command without questioning him. When Michael has the opportunity to kill Gabriel, he lets go of him and shows mercy.

In the final scene, you see Jeep and Charlie, who seem to have found each other, driving away with the baby in a car, the hold full of weapons.

reception

The film received mostly negative reviews, although some aspects, especially the performance of the actors, were positively highlighted. Joe Leydon of the industry journal Variety said , "even if the blood-and-thunder-nonsense moves within an exaggerated plot on a dangerous tightrope walk on the verge of absurdity, the admirably straightforward portrayals of the main actors offer sufficient counterbalance and create curiosity and sympathy". The Hollywood Reporter's Frank Scheck's assessment was also mixed: "The plot of the film is seriously stupid, but director Scott Stewart shows enough style by actually making the process entertaining." Scheck also praised the cast, namely Paul Bettany, whom he did attested an impressive presence. Mike Hale of the New York Times was relieved that the action in the film just didn't get underway because one short scene in the sky looked like a college Shakespeare performance. But he also praised the cast, which unfortunately would be slowed down by leaden dialogues and poor narrative skills.

Some Christian critics in the United States argued that Legion was blasphemous and conveyed an anti-Christian message by misrepresenting God and angels. The German criticism was similar to the American one, for example the film-dienst : "Trashy fantasy thriller with biblical set pieces, which apart from considerable visual effects has little to offer and gets lost in aimless banging around."

Further adaptations

From 2014 to 2015, the US TV channel Syfy released the series Dominion , which is based on the film, but follows a different timeline and is set 25 years after the apocalypse.
