The company's history goes back to 1860.

In 2001 Legrand was taken over by competitor Schneider Electric in a public takeover; The European competition authorities ultimately forbade the takeover and Schneider had to sell Legrand on to the private equity investors Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) and Wendel Investissement . After the reintroduction to the stock exchange in April 2006, KKR and Wendel each hold 31 percent of the shares. 96.1% are currently in free float .
