Leopold Andres
Leopold Andres (born November 14, 1866 in Linz , † May 20, 1950 in Kainbach ) was an Austrian general , cartographer and geodesist .

Andres went to the completion of primary school only to the military secondary school in Moravian Weisskirchen and then to the Imperial and Royal Technical Military Academy in Vienna , where he the genius troops belonged. After retirement , he came to the I. kuk Genie Regiment "Kaiser Franz Josef" as a lieutenant . After the engineering troops were disbanded, Andres moved as first lieutenant to engineer battalion No. 13.
Andres then applied to the kuk Military Geography Institute (MGI), where he worked from September 1, 1899. In addition, he took part in lectures at the Technical University in Vienna in 1899/1900 as an extraordinary listener . After only 13 months at MGI, he took over the management of the trigonometric department (until November 19, 2006) and then the management of the astronomical department (until February 25, 1906). After Robert Daublebsky von Sterneck , the head of the Geodetic Group, retired in February 1906, Andres also took over this position. This means that he also belonged to the Austro-Hungarian army . Although he was retired on February 1, 1921 , he was promoted to major general in recognition of his services to the work of the Austrian Commission for International Earth Surveying (Ö.KIE) . Andres was President of the Ö.KIE from 1937 to 1946
Leopold Andres was a leading surveyor of his time, he led gravity measurements in the Tauern by, was groundbreaking in establishing international principles of measuring, organized from 1914 to 1918 the international war survey and asked the Balkans - Cartography modern basics.

family
Andres came from an old family of officers. His father († 1874) was most recently professor of geodesy and astronomy at the Theresian Military Academy . In 1893 he married Laura Kubelka.
