Leskov Iceland is a small uninhabited volcanic island of the southern Atlantic Ocean lying British overseas territory " South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands ". It was discovered and named in 1819 by the Russian Antarctic explorer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen . He named the island after Lieutenant A. Leskov, the 3rd officer of his expedition ship Vostok .

geography

Leskov Island is located about 530 km southeast of the main island of South Georgia and about 370 km north of the 60th parallel south latitude in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands and together with its two neighboring islands of about 50 km northeast and east, Zavodovski Island and Visokoi Island, forms the group of Traversay Islands .

The island with a land area of less than 0.4 km² is of volcanic origin. There is no record of an outbreak in historical times; investigations in 1964 found fumaroles along the summit ridge. The exact age of the island is not known; Determining the age of a single rock sample using the potassium-argon method revealed an age of around 0.7 million years. Leskov Island differs from the other South Sandwich Islands in two peculiarities: Firstly, Leskov lies to the west outside the arch of the island that the other South Sandwich Islands form, and secondly, the rock on the island is not predominantly basalt as in the other islands, but consists almost entirely of andesite .
