Lev Detela (born April 2, 1939 in Maribor , Slovenia ) is an Austrian writer of Slovenian origin who writes in Slovenian and German .

Life

Lev Detela (actually Leo von Detela) was born in Maribor, Slovenia, and spent his childhood in Lower Styria and Ljubljana , where he graduated from high school in 1958 and began studying Slavic Studies . In 1960 he left what was then Yugoslavia and continued his studies at the University of Vienna . From the 70s of the last century he turned primarily to literature . He was married to the poet Milena Merlak (1935-2006), with whom he had three sons. Detela now lives with his partner in Vienna and in the Waldviertel .

Lev Detela writes poetry , narrative prose , essays and dramas. He also works as a translator and cultural reporter in Slovenian and German for newspapers and magazines in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Slovenia. Before 1990 his books were banned in Slovenia because he was considered a dissident . He designed contributions for various radio stations in Germany, Austria and Italy, since 1990 also for Radio Slovenija. His literary work has been translated into English, Spanish, Italian, Romanian , Hungarian, Slovak, Serbian, Albanian and Gujarati .

He is co-editor and editor of the journal for international literature LOG . He used to be editor of the magazines Most in Trieste , Mladje in Carinthia and the Slovenian exile magazine Slovenska vest . He currently works for the Slovenian literary magazines SRP and Meddobje .

Lev Detela translates Austrian literature into Slovenian, including works by Klaus Sandler , Bodo Hell , Liesl Ujvary , Peter Henisch , Peter Rosei and Ernst Jandl .

Lev Detela is a member of the Austrian [PEN] -Club., In the literary circle Podium and in the IG Authors Authors , also in the Association of Slovenian Writers in Austria - Klagenfurt and in the Association of Slovenian Writers in Ljubljana.

As a bilingual author, Lev Detela publishes in Slovenian and German. His work was honored with the Abraham Woursell Award New York (University of Vienna) for the promotion of young European authors 1966-1970, among other things he received the Easter Prize "Vstajenje" of the Slovenian cultural organizations in Trieste in 1969, the Certificate of Merit of the Slovenian Research Center of America 1970, the AStA - Literature Prize of the University of Tübingen 1970, the literature prize of the novel competition of the magazine Das Pult 1976, the promotion prize for literature of the Theodor-Körner-Stiftungsfonds for the promotion of science and art 1976 and 1989, a state scholarship for literature from the Federal Ministry for Teaching and art in 1976, the Lower Austria Prize for Literature in 1982 and the Literature Prize of the Hermagoras Verlag in Klagenfurt in 1987. A central theme in Lev Detela's texts is political persecution. Formally, it is linked to modernist and experimental literature. He is one of the in-house authors of Hermagoras Verlag , Klagenfurt / Celovec , whose literary prize he was awarded. At times he published under the pseudonym Levček Detelinski.
