Gebze (ancient name Libyssa ; ancient Greek Λίβυσσα; ancient names Gekbuze , Ghviza , Gavize , Gebize ) is a Turkish industrial city on the Marmara Sea in the province of Kocaeli .

location

Gebze is now on the Anatolian outskirts of Istanbul . There are numerous industrial plants in the vicinity of the city, which have been constantly expanded, especially since the 1990s.

The Istanbul excursion destinations Tuzla and Darıca are close to Gebze. The only zoo in Istanbul can be found in Darıca.

history

In 183 BC Chr. Committed Hannibal in Gebze suicide to escape a capture by the Romans. Sultan Mehmet II. Fatih , the conqueror of Constantinople, died in the nearby town of Hünkar Çayre in 1481 .

On July 13, 1920, a battle between British troops and Turkish nationalists took place here, in which the 20th Hussars rode the last cavalry attack in a closed regimental formation.
