Lighthouse Family is a British music duo that was active from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s and re-founded in 2010. British born singer Tunde Baiyewu and London keyboardist Paul Tucker formed the group in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1993 after meeting while studying at university . The good sales of their 1995 debut album Ocean Drive made the band popular representatives of easy listening across Europe . They are best known for their songs Free , Lifted , Ocean Drive , Raincloud and High .
history
Both Baiyewu and Tucker were working in bars when they first met. Together they recorded demos of a number of songs written by Tuckers in the late 1980s. Among them, a demo of "Ocean Drive" caught the attention of Polydor Records A&R Director Colin Barlow, who signed a contract with the group in 1993 for a six-month development phase.
In the wake of the economic recession in Great Britain at that time the British record companies were mainly interested in short-term success under contract. In contrast, Barlow expected the group's success to last "10 years or more." At the start of the first album, Polydor invested ₤ 250,000 in the band. The music videos could now also be shot abroad in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
The first single "Lifted" was broadcast on BBC Radio One as well as a number of BBC Local Radio stations. The Chart Show showed the accompanying music video. Nevertheless, this did not lead to significant single or album sales in 1995; it was only after Lifted was re-released in 1996 that the song came into the top five of the UK singles chart . Ocean Drive, which went platinum six times by the end of 1997, remained in the UK album charts for a total of 175 weeks.
Lighthouse Family postponed their appearances in the spring of 2003 due to many advertising appearances after the release of Whatever Gets You Through the Day in 2001. This has led both members to individual projects. Baiyewu became a solo artist while Tucker joined the rock band The Orange Lights .
comeback
In November 2010 the duo announced a return of the Lighthouse Family and planned a UK & Ireland tour in February and March 2011. It was the Lighthouse Family’s first performance in eight years. In an interview with BBC Breakfast on January 17, 2011, the Lighthouse Family announced that they still spoke to each other after the first breakup. In addition, there is no current defined schedule for the release of a new album. However, during the interview, Tucker mentioned that the duo had "pockets ... full of songs".
