Lindsey Scherf (born September 18, 1986 ) is an American long-distance runner .

In 2005 she set a US junior record over 10,000 m .

In 2007 she received a Medical Exemption from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for the use of the drug Flovent because of her stress asthma. During a study visit to Australia, she planned to start at the Gold Coast Marathon and nine weeks in advance asked the USADA whether she needed an international permit. When she did not arrive by race day for unknown reasons and received medical advice not to stop taking the medication, she asked the race director of the race whether a doping control would be carried out. This denied; however, Scherf was asked to take a test after she finished second. On the recommendation of her father over the phone, she refused the test, as the doping control officers did not give her any information as to whether a positive sample was sanctioned more severely than one refused. When her father, who had sought external advice in the meantime, suggested that she agree to the control, the Australian doping agency refused. It later emerged that the international permit was not required and Scherf could have started with their national permit.

In October 2007, the USADA decided not to impose the standard penalty of two-year ineligibility for doping test refusals, but rather the minimum penalty of one-year ineligibility, because of exceptional circumstances. Scherf waived an objection for reasons of cost. A month later, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) filed a lawsuit in the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) to impose a two-year ban. In August 2008, the CAS decided in favor of Scherf.

In 2012 she came 14th in the New York City Half Marathon , came second in the US runner-up in the 25km road run in the River Bank Run and won the 10km race at the Ottawa Race Weekend . In 2014 she finished third in the Azalea Trail Run and twelfth in the Chicago Marathon . In 2015 she finished second in the Grandma's Marathon .

In college, she started at Harvard University and the University of Oregon before graduating from the University of Michigan in 2010 . She is currently an assistant trainer at Duke University and has a contract with the sporting goods manufacturer Mizuno .
