The line 5 is a subway line of the New York City Subway and runs from Eastchester - Dyre Avenue in Eastchester ( The Bronx ) on the IRT Dyre Avenue Line , IRT White Plains Road Line , IRT Jerome Avenue Line , IRT Lexington Line , IRT Eastern Parkway Line and IRT Nostrand Avenue Line to Flatbush Avenue - Brooklyn College . Since it runs on the trunk line under Lexington Avenue , it has the line identification color dark green and is also known as the Lexington Avenue Express .

Line 5 runs during the day in Manhattan and Brooklyn as the "Express", which only stops at selected stations on the route, but in the Bronx as "Local". At peak times, additional trains run in the main traffic direction on the northern section of the IRT White Plains Road Line, which then also run as express in the Bronx. At night only the IRT Dyre Avenue Line section (between East 180 Street and Eastchester - Dyre Avenue / 233st Street ) is served, as all other sections of the 5 are served by other lines.
