Lioba Braun (born September 14, 1957 in Hanau ) is a German opera singer (alto, mezzo-soprano, soprano). She also teaches as a professor at the Cologne University of Music and Dance .

Life

Braun grew up in Würzburg , where she first studied church music and then worked as a cantor at the Würzburg Cathedral . At the age of 27, Braun's voice was discovered by the singing teacher Charlotte Lehmann .

After stints at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, from 1989 at the Vienna Volksoper and shortly afterwards at the Wiener Staatsoper from 1993 to 2003 she was a member of the ensemble of the Nationaltheater Mannheim , where she sang numerous mezzo-soprano roles by Wagner and Verdi, among others.

Braun had her first international appearance in 1994 at the Bayreuth Festival as Brangäne in “Tristan und Isolde” under Daniel Barenboim . She sang these and the Wagner roles Kundry / Parsifal, Ortrud / Lohengrin, Fricka and Götterdämmerungs-Waltraute / Ring, Venus / Tannhäuser, Isolde / Tristan (under Andris Nelsons in Birmingham and Paris) at La Scala, the Teatro Real in Milan in Madrid and at the Liceu in Barcelona as well as in Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Munich, Stuttgart, Zurich, Rome, Los Angeles and at the Vienna State Opera .

Her opera roles, in addition to Wagner and Verdi (Eboli, Azucena), also by Bartok (Judith / Blaubart), Strauss (composer / Ariadne auf Naxos, nurse / woman without shadow, Marschallin / Rosenkavalier) and Mozart (Donna Elvira / Don Giovanni) as well She sang the great solo parts in the symphonies of Gustav Mahler and in works by Berg, Brahms and Beethoven in the Wiener Musikvereinssaal, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, at the Salzburg Festival and the Dresden Music Festival, with the Pope in Rome and in the Berlin Philharmonic Conductors Christian Thielemann , Mariss Jansons , Andris Nelsons, Zubin Mehta , Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly , Claudio Abbado , Christoph Eschenbach , Lorin Maazel , Myung-Whun Chung , Kent Nagano , Giuseppe Sinopoli , Simon Rattle and Riccardo Muti . The collaboration with orchestras included the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Concertgebouw Orkest Amsterdam, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.

Since October 2010 Braun has been a professor of singing at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and at the Munich University of Music and Theater in addition to her vocal activities .

Braun has made various CD recordings, including Lioba Braun sings Wagner (SONY 2005) under the direction of Peter Schneider , Mozart's Requiem under Christian Thielemann (2006), Mahler's 2nd and 8th symphonies under Jonathan Nott (Tudor 2009/2011), as well as the old rhapsody by Brahms with Helmuth Rilling (2006).
