Ensembles
Ensemble old town Betzenstein with castle
The ensemble ( location ) includes the castle and town within the boundaries of the fortifications that have been preserved, as well as the Scheunenviertel, Beim Hinteren Thor, which extends to the northwest. The fortifications, which were built under the Counts of Leuchtenberg since 1359, adjoin the castle rock. The main axis of the city plan is the wide market and main street that extends between the still preserved Bayreuth Gate in the north and the former Nürnberger Tor in the south. It drops slightly from south to north and at the same time gains in width. Its two long sides are built on by closed rows of bourgeois gabled houses - including some eaves side houses - which were mostly built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Century. On the west side of Marktstrasse the tower of the baroque parish church jumps in front of the row of houses. This creates a subdivision of the street into two square-like spaces. The narrow Schmidbergstraße runs east parallel to the main street. It has a closed two-storey development with gabled and eaves siding houses, mostly former farm citizens' properties. Most of the buildings belong to the 18th and 19th centuries. Century on, on the east side they come up against the city wall. To the west of the main street, a street arch closes around the church, which also provides access from the third gate of the city, the parish gate. This area is also determined by arable houses, mostly gabled buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries. Century and both closed and loosely developed. The former town hall from 1663 and the old rectory have been preserved in the southern part of this area, while the northern part is dominated by the former Nuremberg nursing office castle from the late 17th century. To the west of the parish gate is the Scheunenviertel, Beim Hinteren Thor, whose historical structure dates from the 18th – 19th centuries. Century. File number: E-4-72-118-1.
City fortifications
The complex was built in 1533–38 on the basis of fortifications from the 14th century. Renewals took place in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the southwest the city fortifications are connected to the fortifications of the castle. Two of the three former gates have been preserved, the Bayreuther Tor (Hauptstrasse 1 ( location )) and the parish gate (Am Hinteren Tor 2 ( location )); the Nuremberg Gate in the south was demolished in 1809/10. File number D-4-72-118-1.

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
