Last Heller 7 51 ° 24 ′ 36 ″ N, 9 ° 42 ′ 31 ″ E |
Inn | In the days of robber barons, the trade route from Bavaria to the north was along the Werra. Helmo von der Lippoldsburg, together with the gentlemen from the Brackenburg and von der Spiegelburg, made many attacks. Then they reveled in the jug at the entrance to the Ilkstal. One evening Helmo gambled away all his money down to the last penny while throwing the dice. He put this together with his castle. In vain! Amid the scornful laughter of his cronies, he stormed out and collided with the devil. Against the promise not to allow any clergy to stay or shelter in his castle, the latter handed him a bag of money. His wife, however, had a priest come to the christening of her first-born and housed him in the castle. The men returned from the next foray without having achieved anything, but without Helmo, who was later found with his neck turned upside down. In memory of that terrible incident, Veit Meier's Wegekrug was called the 'Last Heller'. | ||
