Today the Archbishop of Vienna is the Metropolitan of the ecclesiastical province of Vienna, to which the diocese of Eisenstadt , the diocese of Linz and the diocese of St. Pölten belong.
Vienna has had its own diocese since 1469, when Pope Paul II established the dioceses of Vienna and Wiener Neustadt through the bull In supremae dignitatis specula . From 1469 to 1513, bishops from other dioceses were appointed as administrators for Vienna . The first bishop to reside in Vienna was Georg von Slatkonia . In 1631 Emperor Ferdinand II granted the Bishop of Vienna the title of Imperial Prince . In 1722 the Diocese of Vienna was founded by Pope Innocent XIII. elevated to the rank of archdiocese with the bull Suprema dispositione . Since 1631 his successors bore the title of Prince Bishop , since 1722 the title of Archbishop . From 1861 to 1918 the archbishops had a seat in the Reichsrat as members of the manor house .
