List of courts in the HRR
This list contains the historical dishes in the Holy Roman Empire .
Preliminary remark
This list cannot claim to be complete. The Holy Roman Empire consisted of more than 1,500 imperial territories , each with its own jurisdiction. In addition, there were a number of patrimonial courts , privileged places of jurisdiction, etc. In addition, these territories and courts changed many times in the 9 centuries of the existence of the empire.
Since the separation of the judiciary from the administration only occurred in the supreme courts and this only occurred in the course of the 15th to 17th centuries, most of the judicial organs were simultaneously involved in judicial and administrative tasks. In this list basically all institutions to be included, which also dealt with jurisdiction. In the last instance, the ruler himself was typically the judge. For reasons of redundancy, it does not make sense to duplicate lists of rulers here.
The competences of the courts were divided into high jurisdiction , intermediate jurisdiction and lower jurisdiction . This list can include dishes of all types.
The term "court" in courts during this period does not indicate that the judicial function was in the foreground or that it was exclusively exercised. Rather, it was usually an administrative and judicial district, analogous to the office .
Historical courts with jurisdiction over the empire
- Royal Court of Justice (depending on where the king / emperor is staying)
- Reichshofrat in Vienna
- Imperial Court of Justice (from 1527 in Speyer , from 1689 in Wetzlar )
Higher Appeal Courts
The electors had the privilege de non appellando since the decree of the Golden Bull of 1356 . By the end of the empire, all major imperial estates acquired this right. In return, they had to set up higher appeal courts, which were the courts of last resort at the level of the territory.
Courts by Territory
Due to the mass of dishes, the list below is broken down by territory.
