Basement
Basement (Map) 13th century, gradually expanded and expanded System of underground passages and cavities under the Kirchberg and adjacent areas, laid out and expanded for storage and defense purposes, of local historical importance.

Monument text: Widely branched corridor system under the Geithainer Kirchberg and adjacent areas (total length approx. 1100 m), use as escape and storage rooms, possibly laid out at the time the city was founded and expanded until the 18th century, partially connected, several entrances. Recorded in 1991 by Bergsicherung Leipzig, about 200 meters backfilled for safety reasons. Basement and corridors between 1.10 and 3 meters high and about 1.50 meters wide. In 1994 the cavity systems under Zollhaus and Kirchberg were connected to each other and released for inspection, increased to 1.80 meters. Visitor path between the rectory and Dammühle 412 meters, another 400 meters filled. The corridor under the customs house led under the city wall and served as a dropout in times of siege. The Geithainer cellars document both the city's stock management in the past and the defense of the city's residents in the event of war. For these reasons, they embody an important historical significance.

Escape and storage corridors and cellars, possibly already laid out at the time the city was founded and expanded into the 18th century, partially connected to one another. Recorded in 1991 by Bergsicherung Leipzig, about 200 meters backfilled for safety reasons. Basement and corridors between 1.10 and 3 meters high and about 1.50 wide. In 1994 the cavity systems under Zollhaus and Kirchberg were connected to each other and released for inspection, increased to 1.80 meters. Visitor path between the rectory and Dammühle 412 meters, another 400 meters filled. Entrance at the rectory and customs house.

Powder tower (city wall with partially preserved shell towers and remains of a rectangular full tower (butter tower))
Powder tower (city wall with partially preserved shell towers and remains of a rectangular full tower (butter tower)) (Map) 13th century (city wall) Formerly a closed wall around the old town, which is elongated in a west-east direction, longer sections of the north and south walls have been preserved as rising masonry, as well as the impressive western wall area at the Nikolaikirche, of the four city gates belonging to the city fortifications, only the lower gate with the attached city gate house still exists ( Leipziger Straße 68, see individual monument document object 08970910), the Powder Tower was also included in the city fortifications (outdoor area 6, see individual monument document object 08971159), of importance in terms of local history, urban development history and urban planning.

Geithain was first referred to as a city (civitas) in 1209 and already had fortifications at that time, the extent to which this already affected the existing quarry stone city wall cannot be named exactly. Even the first settlement in Sorbian prehistory was probably surrounded by a circular rampart. With the village foundation of the place at the time of the eastern colonization (12th century) and the expansion to a town that soon followed, the town fortifications were obviously built successively. In the 14th century this was fully developed. It consisted of the city wall, which formerly formed a closed wall that delimited and protected the old town area, which was elongated in the east-west direction, four gates (upper, lower, bad and mill gate) and two gates (dye gate and tripe gate), which granted controlled access to the city, and the city moat in advance, which had been created using the creek valleys of the bag water and the Eula. In addition to various shell towers, the city wall was defensively reinforced by the so-called Butter Tower in the southeast and the Powder Tower in the northeast, which was originally part of a no longer existing Freihof (margravial Vogtsitz). Together with the tower of the abandoned upper gate, they formed the three-towered eastern weir, which is recorded in the city's coat of arms. The oldest historical views from the 17th century (Dilich 1628 and Merian 1650) show the city fortifications on the south side. Whether the city fortifications were particularly effective is questionable, as the city was repeatedly taken and plundered in times of war. Thus, in the course of time, the maintenance measures on the wall subsided and the settlement in front of the city gates spread. The citizens demolished parts of the wall on their properties, other sections fell into disrepair. The ditch area was also no longer maintained and silted up or filled up. Nevertheless, the Geithain city wall has survived to a considerable extent (around 1300 meters). In the 20th century, people remembered their historical value and carried out conservation and renovation measures so that the following components bear witness to the former fortifications: Longer sections of the north and south walls and the imposing western wall area below the Nikolaikirche have been preserved as rising masonry , which also includes a largely complete shell tower. The strong supporting pillars are also striking at this point. Further shell towers can be found in remnants on the south side (two, near “Pforte” or “Rosental”) and the north side (one). Of the two towers that strengthened the city wall towards the east, the so-called butter tower on the southeast corner as a stump and the powder tower on the northeast corner have largely been completely preserved. On the east side, the former city wall is only present or recognizable in areas close to the ground and partly overbuilt by buildings, so that there is no monument value here due to the rudimentary condition and the resulting lack of clarity. Of the four city gates, only the lower gate on the west side of the city remains (see Leipziger Strasse 68) and of the two gates that existed on the south side there is only the Därberpforte. The choir (old school) and the rectory are built directly on the fortification on the west and south-west sides. The wall sections of the north and south wall still form the outer property border of the old town house plots, the buildings of which are typically on the street side and behind which gardens mostly extend up to the said city wall sections. A section of the south-eastern city wall (near the Färberpforte) was restored in the 1950s, a stone plaque attached there reminds of this. The area in front of the city wall with the city moat has been almost completely redesigned as a result of recent changes and redesigns and can hardly be experienced in its former quality as part of the fortification. Allotment gardens (on the former area of the Baderteich) and a sports field (1925, previously used as a bleaching plan) were laid out on the south side. The city park was built in several sections on the north side from 1903. Slopes that fall directly from the city wall in places on the north and south sides have been used for horticultural purposes on various occasions. On the north side in particular, so-called moat gardens were laid out relatively early, some of which are still preserved. The city wall, together with the other buildings that were formerly part of the city fortifications, is an important testimony to the local history of Geithain; it also refers to characteristic phenomena of the Saxon, especially medieval city development in general. Furthermore, it is a defining part of the cityscape, especially on the west side, and contributes to its uniqueness. Thus, for reasons of local history and urban development history as well as urban planning reasons, there is a public interest in their preservation.

Around 1,300 meters of preserved city wall on the north and south side of the city and on the west side on a rock spur, here also a well-preserved shell tower, further shell towers in remains on the south side (2, at the "gate" and near the Rosenthal ) and the north side (1). In particular, the high wall on the west side was reinforced with strong supporting pillars. The south-east corner of the fortified city complex is marked by the stump of the so-called Butter Tower; as part of the three-tower eastern weir, this rectangular tower, together with the tower of the abandoned upper gate and the powder tower, is recorded in the city's coat of arms. On the west side, the former city wall is only present or recognizable in areas close to the ground and partly overbuilt by buildings, so that there is no monument value here due to the rudimentary condition and the resulting lack of clarity. The choir (old school) and the rectory are built directly on the fortification on the west and south-west sides.

Saxon postal mile pillars (totality): Milestone
Saxon postal mile pillars (totality): Milestone Altenburger Strasse
(map)
around 1856 (milestone) Copy of a station stone, distance stone, of importance in terms of traffic and surveying history.

The royal Saxon milestones were the successors of the Saxon postal milestones. On September 1, 1858, the road construction engineer Wilke began to re-measure the Saxon roads. This re-measurement formed the basis for the introduction of the new measurement system. This comprised station stones, milestones, half-milestones, branch stones and border crossing stones. The station stones were set up at the beginning and end of mail routes. The names and the distance of the towns along the route were marked on them. The milestones were right on the road. On one side of the stone was the name and distance of the starting point and on the other side the name and distance of the place at the end of the mail route. The half-milestones should mark the route. A crown was attached on either side. labeling was not common. Junction stones stood at junctions from the main route and usually only bore the name of the next post office without any indication of the distance. The name “Kingdom of Saxony” was marked on the border crossing stones. On the other hand, these contained place names and distances. The distance between station stones and whole milestones was 1 mile (this corresponds to 7.5 km). Accordingly, the distance between the station stone and half mile stone and between half mile stone and whole mile stone was ½ mile = 3.75 km. Since 1875, the meter has been the official measure of length throughout the German Empire (including the Kingdom of Saxony). For this reason, the stones have been changed many times to the new size. All stones were made from sandstone. The former station stone on Altenburger Strasse (Bundesstrasse 7) is probably a copy. Like all stones, like the original, it was made of sandstone and provided with a crown. It is labeled as follows: Spiegel 1 "Rochlitz 1.20 M" and Spiegel 2 "Altenburg 3.00 M". As part of the comprehensive surveying system, this station stone is also of great importance in terms of traffic history.

Saxon postal mile pillars (totality): Post mile pillar
Saxon postal mile pillars (totality): Post mile pillar Altenburger Strasse
(map)
re. 1727 Distance column, with inscriptions, restored, of regional and traffic history.

Monument text: Kursächsische distance column marked 1727, made of porphyry tuff, stood at the Obertor, in the typical form (labeled with distance information) on a high base, with two Polish and spa coats of arms as well as "AR" monogram and post horn mark, restored in 1923, destroyed in 1971, to 1979 Piece of coat of arms by the sculptor Hofmann (VEB Steinindustrie Rochlitz) and Steinmetz Gerhard Voigt (VEB Natursteinwerk Rochlitzer Porphyr) renewed and re-erected. In 1722, the Electorate of Saxony began to erect the Saxon post-mile pillars. Elector Friedrich August I wanted to build a modern traffic and transport control system in the electorate in order to promote trade and economy. He entrusted Magister Adam Friedrich Zürner (1679 - 1742) with the implementation. The system of post mile pillars comprised distance pillars, quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars. The distance columns should be set up in the cities in front of the city gates, later only on the marketplaces. Quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars were set up along the Poststrasse. They received a consecutive numbering (row number), starting from the beginning of the measurement. The all-mile columns were set up outside the cities on the post roads at a distance of 1 mile (= 9.062 km). The distance pillars were marked with the monogram "AR" for "Augustus Rex", the Electoral Saxon and Polish-Lithuanian double coat of arms and the Polish royal crown. The full mile, half mile columns and quarter milestones were all similarly labeled, none of them had a coat of arms, but the monogram "AR". The distances were given in hours (1 hour = ½ post mile = 4.531 km). This mile system was the first European traffic management system. The pillar considered here is of great importance in the history of traffic as part of the nationally significant postal system. Obelisk, porphyry tuff, coat of arms, inscriptions with location information, year “1727”, high base, restored from 1971–1979

City park with Geithainer healing spring (city park (garden monument) and former spring with fountain system)

City park with Geithainer healing spring (city park (garden monument) and former spring with fountain system) Bahnhofstrasse
(map)
1903-1910 Park west of Bahnhofstrasse (Unterer Park) to Altenburger Strasse and east of Bahnhofstrasse (Oberer Park) to Colditzer Strasse or Laachgasse, of importance in terms of garden history, local history and urban planning.

Monument text: The Geithainer Stadtpark was built in several sections between 1903 and 1910. The area in front of the city wall north of the old town was used to create the city park. This is crossed by a stream, the so-called bag water. First, the Lower City Park was built in two stages, starting from the west. The initiative to design a city park for Geithain came from the beautification association founded for this purpose, which also participated in the financing. Otto Illing, the municipal head gardener in Poznan and a native of Geithain, provided the planning for the first phase of execution. The implementation was in the hands of Ernst Pflanz, who ran a tree nursery in Böhlen near Leipzig. On June 2, 1905, the newly created part of the city park was opened to the public. As early as 1906, work began on the second section, with which the facility was expanded in an easterly direction to Bahnhofstrasse. Ernst Plant was again entrusted with the production, who now worked here according to his own planning. The work was probably completed in 1908, or in 1909 at the latest. At the intersection between the first and second sections of the park, marked by a path (as an extension of Hospitalstrasse), a round square was created - as a design highlight, as it were - which in 1908 was equipped with a four-pass fountain basin made of cast cement, manufactured by Oelschlägel in Zwickau. The basin was decorated with a fountain (no fountain figure was added for financial reasons). In addition, a circular children's playground was created in the second section, on the so-called poorhouse meadow. The Beautification Association had covered the costs of planting and creating seating for both sections. In 1909, Ernst Plant was commissioned to continue the park on the right of Bahnhofstrasse on the “Communwiesen” there. This third section of the Geithainer Stadtpark extends to Colditzer Strasse or Laachgasse. Here, according to Pflanz's plans, a pond with an island was created in the front part facing Bahnhofstrasse. For the promenade-like design of the immediate pond environment, the brook was arched and a planting of cover shrubs (low and creeping) and ornamental trees (individual pyramids and hanging trees) was created. For the rear, westernmost area, the project envisaged a forest-like planting, as it were, framing the pond area. Plant took some of the plants from the existing parts of the plant, which were then replaced by replanting. In 1910 the third section was largely or completely implemented. In the period that followed, the city park area east of Bahnhofstrasse was referred to as the Upper City Park. With the condition of the park now reached, the beautification association saw its purpose fulfilled and dissolved in 1912. Regardless of this, the city planned to build a fourth part of the complex in 1917. This obviously concerned the area north of the Upper City Park on Bahnhofstrasse. Ernst Plant was once again committed to this task. The war situation in 1917/18 did not allow the planning to be carried out; the project was not approached again until 1919, but was ultimately not implemented. In 1932 the “Heilquelle” in the Upper City Park was inaugurated, fed from a well 105 m deep. In 1985, a zoo was set up in the Upper City Park, which is still there today. In 2003, renovation measures with various replacement plantings took place, especially in the Lower City Park. In 2007 a concept for the maintenance and upgrading of the Lower City Park was drawn up and approved by the Geithain City Council. The Geithainer Stadtpark is an elongated complex that frames the entire north side of the old town beyond the city wall. The length of the park is approx. 460 m, its width varies between 50 m and 100 m. The complex is divided into the older Lower City Park (western part) and the younger Upper City Park (eastern part), with Bahnhofstrasse running in between. The first western area of the Lower City Park was originally characterized by a particularly curved system of paths, which has been reduced over time. Until the late 19th century, the Spitalteich was located on this area, which was recently more and more silted up. There is no precise information about the original planting. Historical views show tree planting and lawns, and shrubs were also present. There were probably ornamental beds, for example around the fountain basin with fountain, which served as the design highlight of the complex. The fountain basin lay on a round square, to which the north-south path was widened at the height of Hospitalstrasse in the middle. The equipment of the oldest part included garden bridges with branch railings that spanned the stream, known as bag water, flowing through the park. The bridge railings were made by the "District Poor and Labor Institution Hilbersdorf with Queen Carola Verpflegs-Heim". In the second section of the park east of the path with the Brunnenplatz, Ernst Pflanz, who had now also taken on the project planning, obviously followed the design specifications for the first section of the park, which was designed by Otto Illig. At least there were curved paths here too, but in a somewhat simpler form. A second round square, which also occupies the middle of a north-south path, has been designated as a children's playground. In the further course towards Bahnhofstrasse, the park design was evidently simplified even further, with a straight path and lawns defining the picture here, along with rows of trees in some cases along the way. In the course of time, the Lower City Park underwent various changes that led to a reduction in the appearance and loss of equipment elements. The development concept drawn up in 2007 envisages the resumption of important elements of the historic park design, for example the restoration of the round square at the former location of the fountain, based on the historical situation. The swan pond is the defining element in the Upper City Park, east of Bahnhofstrasse, for which Ernst Pflanz was solely responsible for the design and implementation. It has an elongated floor plan with a slightly curved shoreline. In the pond is a small island shifted to the east. According to a description by Pflanz, the areas near the bank were provided with lawns and flat planting, and a walkway led around the pond. On the west side there was a tall, forest-like tree planting, which framed the pond and closed off the park to the east, to the passing Colditzer Straße. At the inlet and outlet of the pond, which was fed by the bag water, there were again bridges in branches as crossings. The spring, which was opened in the forest area in 1932, was given an architectural frame with a blind arch and side cheeks in quarry stone masonry, in front of which there was a small decorative square. The construction was carried out by the Junghans company. The establishment of the zoo in the upper city park led to a certain obscurity of the park's appearance due to the construction of animal structures and fences. The historical basic structures are still clearly legible, and there are old trees. The Geithain City Park was created as a professionally carried out public construction project, which was initiated and promoted by the citizens of Geithain. It is a testimony to a typical bourgeois movement that began in the second half of the 19th century, especially in an urban setting, aimed at increasing the attractiveness of the site and improving the quality of life. Here as elsewhere, behind the initiatives, which often concerned the creation of public greenery, was a beautification association. Through the creation of such facilities as the Geithainer Stadtpark, the cities received an upgrade that continues to have an effect today, combined with an identity-forming character of the cityscape. With these aspects in mind, the Geithainer Stadtpark gains importance in terms of local and garden history and urban planning.

Established in 1903-04 on the initiative of a "Beautification Association" founded for this purpose on the drained area of the hospital pond below the dam and the northern city wall, inaugurated in 1905 by Mayor Höfer. Circular fountain basin, porphyry, around 1920 (fountain was moved to market square).

re. 1727 Distance column, of importance in terms of regional and transport history.

Monument text: Electoral Saxon distance column made of Porphyrtuff, inscribed 1727, almost four meters high, in the typical form (labeled with distance information) on a high base, with two Polish and spa coats of arms as well as "AR" monogram and post horn mark, restored in 1960. The sculptor W. Hempel (Dresden) renewed inscriptions, coat of arms and lace. (LfD / 2013).

Obelisk, porphyry tuff, coat of arms, inscriptions with location information, year "1727", high base, restored in 1960, restored in 1971–1979.

City wall; Butterturm (residential building with tower and stairs on the tower)
City wall; Butterturm (residential building with tower and stairs on the tower) Outdoor area 6
(map)
around 1200 Originally a medieval defense or residential tower of a free courtyard, later part of the city fortifications (see city wall, individual monument document object 08971160), the adjoining house around 1900 with ornamental framework in the gable, of architectural, local and urban significance.

Monument text:

The powder tower originally belonged to a Freihof that was built in the 12th century. It was integrated into the city's fortifications. The margrave bailiff lived in the Freihof, and in early times he was responsible for the local administration, especially the jurisdiction. In 1349 the estate of Bailiff Heinrich von Almsdorf was referred to as "curia et castrum", which suggests a castle-like structure. When the city took over jurisdiction (lower in 1392, upper in 1467), the Freihof became the councilor's stables. The outdoor garden belonging to the courtyard also came to the city and was built on from 1700. During the garrison, the tower was used as an ammunition store and the associated building was used as the “Royal Saxon Provision Office” (1683–1897). The building was converted into a residential building in 1914. The slim tower rises above a square floor plan and consists of plastered quarry stone masonry. The corners of the building are accentuated by an irregular corner block made of Rochlitz porphyry tuff. The frames of the doors and some of the slit-like windows are also made of Rochlitz porphyry tuff. The flat tent roof comes from a more recent construction phase, the cityscape by Dilich (1628) shows the tower with a pointed hood. The entrance to the upper floors is halfway up the tower, accessible through steep external stairs that start from a heist. Another entrance to the basement is at the stairs leading to the Heiste. The residential building attached to the tower is a plastered building with ornamental framework in the gable and eaves and is thus under the design influence of the country house style around 1900.

The Powder Tower and the residential building connected to it are important evidence of important stages in the town's development. The building of the tower in particular refers to the history of its origins and the social conditions in Geithain's early days. As a former part of the city fortifications, the Powder Tower also embodies an informative value in terms of local history. At the same time, it is an architectural history document on the status and development of medieval defense construction. In addition, it is one of the city's identity-creating landmarks and thus has urban significance. (LfD / 2017).

Slender tower on a square floor plan, with a flat tent roof, quarry stone masonry (newly plastered) with irregular Rochlitz porphyry tuff corner blocks, entrance at half the height of the tower, accessible via steep external stairs from Heiste, narrow window slots with porphyry tufa framing, used as a powder tower by the garrison since 1683, adjoining house with decorative framework in the gable and eaves zone.

Former hospital

Former hospital Grimmaische Strasse 14
(map)
late 17th century, later rebuilt Plastered building with porphyry tufa structure, segmental arch portal, hipped roof on the street side, significance in terms of local history and social history.

Monument text:

The former hospital building emerged from an old dye house, which the town of Geithain bought from Major Hans August Wilhelm von Carlowitz in 1834 (purchase price 215 tons) and converted into a hospital and poor house by 1835. The city council had to finance the acquisition and renovation of the building in part through a loan. The old hospital, the founding of which dates back to the 13th century, was demolished in 1811 because it was in disrepair; it was located at the hospital pond, which is closer to the city. After the old hospital was demolished, the town's shepherds' houses on Katharinenplatz were initially used for poor and sick care, when these buildings burned down in 1828 and 1831, the poor and sick were placed in private houses. Since this situation was evidently of little use, it was finally decided to re-establish an independent hospital.

The two-storey building is a plastered building made of brick masonry with dividing elements in porphyry tuff. The shape of the roof (hipped roof on the street side, gable roof on the back) or irregularities in the window arrangement and the late baroque portal of the entrance door show that the existing building stock resulted from one or more renovations. The core of the building probably dates from the 17th century and was changed as early as the 18th century. The capacity of the hospital was soon no longer sufficient. A second, single-storey building (Hospitalstrasse 13a / 13b) was built on the site around the middle of the 19th century, which had to be abandoned as a monument in 2016 due to the poor state of construction. With the new construction of the city hospital from 1889-1894 (Grimmaische Strasse 12, without monument value), the community welfare center experienced a contemporary development. The district doctor found the conditions in the existing buildings of the poor and hospital as unsatisfactory. The older buildings remained in the hands of the city and probably still served social purposes. The former hospital building is an important testimony to the development of community services in the past, both in the local and in the general historical framework. It vividly and authentically documents the poor and sick care in earlier times, especially in the 19th century. For these reasons, the object gains importance in terms of local history and social history. (LfD / 2017).

1868 as a Saxon prototype of the so-called Hoffmann ring furnace of outstanding importance in terms of technology history, besides a larger and thus probably a little later built brick ring furnace in Großtreben the only circular ring furnace preserved in Saxony, also of rarity throughout Germany.

Small ring lime kiln in a circular instead of the oval or elongated shape usually carried out later, a substructure made of natural stone, several combustion chambers arranged in a circle around the central fox, accessible via segment-arched openings (loading aisles) in the masonry that are to be closed during the firing process (charging aisles) in the masonry A half-timbered pit floor (used to feed the combustion chambers through various poke openings in the furnace roof; high-quality lignite sourced from Meuselwitz was used for this in order to be able to reach the high temperatures required for lime burning) and the central forge no longer preserved, progressive lime kiln, with which, despite economical fuel consumption, it was possible to continuously produce large amounts of quicklime (in Geithain about 32 tons of quicklime daily from 70 tons of raw limestone, brick production possible if required). Geithainer gray lime popular due to its cement-like properties as a building material for castles, palaces, cellar vaults and fortress structures, accordingly an important production branch for Geithain and for a long time one of the main employers in the area (six lime kilns in the 18th century), 1868 commissioning of the present first Saxon ring kiln based on the patent from Eduard Hoffmann (patent from the year 1858 by Friedrich Eduard Hoffmann, royal master builder in Berlin, and Julius Albert Gottlieb Licht, city planner of Danzig: “Invention of a ring-shaped furnace for uninterrupted operation when burning all kinds of bricks and pottery, lime, plaster and the like "- later withdrawal of the patent, since as early as 1839 construction of the first approximately ring-shaped kiln with a continuous firing channel and firing from above by the mason / brick master Arnold in Ketschendorf near Fürstenwalde), with the building boom of the early days of further upswing in the lime and brick kiln, fast Distribution of the so-called Hoffmann ring furnace, and further ring furnaces were built in Geithain in the 1880s. Another and much larger Saxon plant from the early days of Hoffmann's ring kilns has been preserved in Großtreben, here as a circular brick ring kiln complete with a chimney floor and chimney (cf. obj. 09286311).

Fliegerdenkmal (Soviet Aviation Memorial)

Fliegerdenkmal (Soviet Aviation Memorial) (Map) 1966 Obelisk over pedestal, historical significance; Example of official Soviet monument architecture of the 1960s.

The aviator memorial was erected for the Soviet pilots Yuri Alexejewitsch Wladimirow (born 1931) and Viktor Nikolajewitsch Schandakow (born 1923), who prevented their plane from crashing on the site in October 1966 and were killed in the process. The small monument, which was probably erected a short time after the event, consists of a base, a middle two-tier granite obelisk with a Soviet star and flanking cheeks. Three inscription panels and a German-Soviet friendship symbol enliven the front. The monument properties of the facility result from its historical significance. On the one hand, it reminds of an event that was significant for the town of Syhra and, on the other hand, of the presence of Soviet troops in East Germany and the ubiquitous monument culture in the GDR.
