Apartment house in closed development, with outbuildings Bahnhofstrasse 35
(map)
1890-1891 Richly designed, late historical plastered clinker brick building with sandstone and artificial stone elements, in the eaves area original cartouches with coats of arms and masks, with shop and gate passage, part of the Wilhelminian development on Bahnhofstraße, significance for the history of the site and the history of the building.

The tenement house was built in 1890/91 according to a design by the Leipzig architect Heinrich Rust, the building owner was the decorative painter Friedrich Wilhelm Gutsche. The three-storey building has a representative clinker plaster facade with decorative and structural elements partly made of sandstone. A widened window axis accentuates the center, lateral templates with coupled windows and a dwelling serve as a lateral border for the facade. In the templates on the one hand a shop fitting, on the other hand the passage into the courtyard. The upper floors and the attic are furnished with apartments, and the tenants are said to have once included officers of the garrison. At the same time as the tenement, the courtyard building on the east side, the laundry room, horse stable with ancillary rooms and the coachman's room on the roof were built. In 1893 another stable building was added on the south side (meanwhile removed).

The tenement house refers to the urban development of Borna in the late 19th century, which was characterized by a structural expansion of the city complex. As a result of the railway connection and the establishment of the barracks in the west, Bahnhofstrasse became a preferred building area, which in the sense of the urban planning of the time was largely given a closed apartment building. As part of this tenement building, the property embodies an informative value in terms of local development. In the courtyard areas there were ancillary buildings that, like here, served the needs of the residents, but could also fulfill commercial purposes. In the unit of tenement house and outbuilding, typical living conditions of the time around 1900 are illustrated. The building-historical significance acquires the property on the one hand as a characteristic and for the small town environment in the facade design also very demanding example of late-historical tenement construction, on the other hand it documents the early work of the architect Heinrich Rust (1865–1931), who later emerged with important Leipzig building projects such as the Michaeliskirche and the congress hall. Residential house in half-open development with an extension to the rear Grimmaer Strasse 16
(map)
around 1860 Plastered facade with clinker and sandstone elements, significance in terms of local development and building history.

The house was built around 1860 and was expanded in 1868 by master mason W. Wangemann on the courtyard side with a connecting building and an extension to the outbuilding. The owner at that time was Carl Wilhelm Martin. The residential building on the street is a two-storey, eaves-standing construction, consisting of plastered brickwork. In the external design, attention was paid not only to the facade, but also to the appearance of the free-standing gable. Door and window frames are made of sandstone. In addition, the appearance is enlivened by clinker brick elements: pilaster strips to emphasize the corners of the building, flat arches over the windows. The eaves and its consoles are made of wood. In the case of the courtyard-side extensions, the shapes of the main building were adhered to. The object is a testimony to the structural development of Borna around the middle of the 19th century, so it is of significance in terms of local development. In terms of its nature, the building is a typical small-town residential building of that time, which bears the characteristics of a handcrafted construction method. It is noticeable that attention was paid to a certain solidity in the execution. From this point of view, it is important in terms of building history. Finally, it also illustrates the living conditions of small town dwellers in the second half of the 19th century (LfD / 2011)

Manor house of the former manor Kesselshain Kesselshain 1
(map)
around 1790 Simple plastered building in late baroque forms, significance in terms of local history, regional history and cultural history.

Former Manor house of the Kesselshain manor, built around 1790. The manor was an essential part of the town for centuries. Kesselshain came into private hands only after the Reformation, previously owned by the Pegau Monastery. The von Carlowitz and von Einsiedel families deserve special mention among the owners. At the end of the 18th century, the manor was acquired by the von Altrock family. In 1826 it was taken over by a bourgeois owner named Müller. In 1864 the Müller family sold the Kesselshain manor to the city of Borna, which in the 1920s sold it to the Sächsische Werke corporation. In the past, Kesselshain was described as having a pleasant and convenient location on the high road to Leipzig and the floodplain of the Eula stream. The square of the manor was a defining element of the village. Several ponds of various sizes surrounded the courtyard. The remaining buildings in the village were limited to 13 houses in the middle of the 19th century. According to the layout, the manor still exists today. From the existing building, the manor house has not only been preserved in its basic form, but also contains a number of important details of the furnishings. The building is one of the simpler examples of its kind, with the relative architectural simplicity in keeping with the style and taste of the late 18th century. The manor house in Kesselshain embodies a significant value for the local history. The manor and inn were once the "figureheads" of the small town. However, the importance of the manor house as a monument extends far beyond the local framework. For centuries, manors were key elements of the economic and social structure in the rural areas of Saxony. This is why there is a high level of documentation value for buildings of this type. (LfD / 2012).

Saxon postal mile pillars (totality): Post mile pillar Reichssteinweg (near Dinterplatz)
(map)
re. 1722 partial copy of a half-mile column, significance in terms of traffic history.

Partial copy of a half-mile column on a square base with the inscriptions "AR, Borna St. 1/2, 1722" and "AR, Colditz St. 4 St 7/8 1722". The column was made from Hilbersdorfer Porphyrtuff by the Rochlitz stonemason Christian Hessler. Steinmetz Franz (Leipzig) restored the column around 1970 and renewed the headpiece and base, as well as the lower half of the shaft. The column was part of the Borna – Colditz post road and was originally in the so-called Royal Prince-Holtze. The original site was dredged over. In 1722, the Electorate of Saxony began to erect the Saxon post-mile pillars. Elector Friedrich August I wanted to build a modern traffic and transport control system in the electorate in order to promote trade and economy. He entrusted Magister Adam Friedrich Zürner (1679 - 1742) with the implementation. The system of post mile pillars comprised distance pillars, quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars. The distance columns should be set up in the cities in front of the city gates, later only on the marketplaces. Quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars were set up along the Poststrasse. They received a consecutive numbering (row number), starting from the beginning of the measurement. The all-mile columns were set up outside the cities on the post roads at a distance of 1 mile (= 9.062 km). The distance pillars were marked with the monogram "AR" for "Augustus Rex", the Electoral Saxon and Polish-Lithuanian double coat of arms and the Polish royal crown. The full mile, half mile columns and quarter milestones were all similarly labeled, none of them had a coat of arms, but the monogram "AR". The distances were given in hours (1 hour = ½ post mile = 4.531 km). This mile system was the first European traffic management system. The pillar considered here is of great importance in the history of traffic as part of the nationally significant postal system.

1895/1896 Rich clinker plastered building in late historical design, winter garden extension in elaborate wooden construction, significance in terms of local history, local development history, social history and building history.

The house was built in 1895/96, the client was the citizen school teacher Carl Hermann Zieger, and it was executed by the local master mason Wilhelm Wangemann. The building site was on the territory of the Haulwitz community, which had belonged to Borna since 1840. In keeping with the typical late historical design, the two-storey building is richly structured and decorated. Red clinker facades over rubble stone bases, structural and decorative elements in plaster and artificial stone. The street front is accentuated by a central projection, ground floor windows with aedicular frames. The preservation of the original windows is remarkable, especially the first floor window of the central projection. This is a fine example of old craftsmanship. The lavish wooden veranda on the back of the building is equally impressive. The house is a testament to the spatial and structural expansion of the city in the second half of the 19th century. Under the aspect of the school system, which played an important role in the more recent Borna history, it has historical significance as it meets the social demands and living conditions of a middle school teacher around 1900 are documented. In this way, the property acquires its site and site development history as well as social history testimony value. As a typical example of the building culture of the time it was built, it is also of architectural significance. It shows the implementation of ideas in architecture at the time with regard to the construction task of a more sophisticated residential building in the expanding small town. (LfD / 2012)

As characteristic examples of the industrial architecture of the early 20th century, the buildings are also of architectural importance. The briquette factory and the Witznitz power station were essentially built in 1912/13 and were in operation until 1992. Coal extraction in the neighboring Witznitz opencast mine. After the plant was closed, the renovation and conversion work began, the redesign concept aims to combine living, working and cultural facilities. The most important components of the factory that are decisive for the monument-relevant informative value have been preserved:

  • Administration building: two-storey plastered building with 5: 7 axes, emphasis on the western entrance area with a three-storey tower porch, southwest corner of the building with a single-storey plastered porch with copper roof, front door, porch door, original interior doors, simple stucco structure in the entrance area, structuring of the exterior walls in the form of pillars, ornaments and Putzfaschen, mansard hipped roof covered with red beaver tails and structured by dormers, wooden windows with almost square proportions, the villa-like character creates a strong contrast to the functional buildings made of yellow clinker, Kaue: yellow clinker brickwork with partially plastered surfaces, U-shaped main building with two smaller ones in front Structures with a flat hipped roof and a transverse structure with a barrel roof in the background, open staircase leads to the different entrances on the ground floor, structured elements in a rich variety of shapes, hillside location, workshop complex: one-storey, mi t segmented arched windows in pointed arch niches, possibly old forge equipment still available
  • New boiler house with chimney: large, cubic structure with a monolithic, functional appearance, characterized by smooth masonry surfaces made of yellow clinker, divided by twelve large rectangular windows with cornice crowning, with ribbon windows under the eaves, slightly inclined gable roof, floor-to-ceiling foundations on the ground floor, no interior walls, one Floor slab is only in

Ground floor available, western part of the building erected as a coal bunker in reinforced concrete, boiler systems removed, entire building gutted, approx. 100 meter high chimney in a round design on an octagonal base, yellow clinker brickwork, simple, slightly tapering shape with a tulip-shaped head, chimney and new boiler house are the most dominant structures in the complex

  • Machine house: divided as a single-storey machine hall in the north and about three meters higher control room in the south, building with eleven axes, yellow clinker bricks with pilaster strips, angular windows framed with precast reinforced concrete, thus conveying a certain degree of hardness in contrast to the arched windows in the adjacent buildings, original inside (Status 1995), switching gallery with stairs and railings, vaulted ceiling with recessed lamps, steam turbines removed, transformer station: east of the machine house, three-winged, yellow clinker brick, facades partially with pilaster strips, flat saddle roofs

Kesselshain manor: mansion of the former Kesselshain manor Kesselshain 1
(map)
around 1790 Simple plastered building in late baroque forms, significance in terms of local history, regional history and cultural history.

The building is one of the simpler examples of its kind, whereby the relative architectural simplicity is in line with the style and taste of the late 18th century. This is why there is a high level of documentation value for buildings of this type.

two-storey building, half-hipped roof, solid ground floor, upper floor half-timbered, e.g. Z. clad, simple stucco ceilings inside, room with groin vaults on the ground floor.
