1912 Striking, architecturally valuable plastered building in very good original condition.

The cultural monument is a four-story residential and commercial building. It was designed in 1912 by the Zwickau architect Oskar Geyer and built under his direction. The master builder Hermann Schmidt from Zwickau was responsible for the masonry work and Th. Keller was responsible for the carpentry work. The client and builder was the Zwickau businessman Hermann Apel. The plastered facade is characterized by pilasters, window frames and medallions made of artificial stone or stone plaster with terrazzo addition typical of the period. Both bay windows on the street side are provided with this material. The bay window above the generously designed entrance area extends in a semicircular shape over three floors. A wooden lantern forms the upper end in the attic area. The bay porch on the right-hand side acts as a link between the neighboring building number 16, which protrudes about three meters further into the street space. It extends from the ground floor to the 3rd floor, where it ends as a roof terrace. The wooden windows that have been preserved in the original contribute significantly to the harmonious overall appearance of the facade. The fact that sun protection devices were integrated into the windows in an extremely cautious manner is of importance for the preservation of historical monuments. The wrought-iron flower box holders, the flag holder, the terrace railing and the preserved skylight grille in the entrance area are of particular design importance. Particularly noteworthy are the four putti on the pilaster strips in the parapet area of the first floor. Inside the original vestibule door, apartment entrance and room doors as well as lead glass windows in the stairwell.

1887 Typical of the time, elaborately structured building in clinker mixed construction in very good original condition, of architectural and urban significance.

The cultural monument is the right half of a mirror-image double apartment building. The four-storey building with a restaurant and shop fittings on the ground floor was designed in 1887 by the Zwickau master builder Carl Fischer and built under his direction. As early as 1898, the originally existing passage was closed, the shop moved to the left and the house entrance relocated to the middle of the semi-detached house. As the original cast-iron column of the combined shop door-shop window element was reused as part of this renovation, the overall appearance has been preserved. The well-structured clinker brick facade is characterized by decorative and subdividing elements typical of the period, such as corner cuboids, window frames, window canopies, strips and cornices made of sandstone or plaster stucco. Particularly noteworthy is a sandstone relief in the parapet area of the 3rd floor, which sits exactly in the middle and thus combines the two semi-detached houses. A steam locomotive is shown, above two female busts arranged in mirror image, in the middle a scrollwork, below in the middle a coat of arms with the year of construction of the building, surrounded by bandwork. The preserved decorative wrought iron anchors are also remarkable. The representation goes back to the name of the restaurant Zur Lokomotive . A pub with the same name already stood in the same place as the previous building. Due to a change of ownership, the restaurant was given the name Zum Reichshof . In 1936 the guest rooms were completely redesigned in the style of the time based on plans by the well-known architects Tamm and Grobe. This equipment was almost completely preserved until 2002. before 1850 Originally with a restaurant, now a shop, as well as a ceramic mural from 1906 over two floors on the street facade (such flat facade designs are something special, comparable to Fürstenzug in Dresden, as painting in Dresden at Goetheallee 55 and Österreicher Straße 18, in Meißen at Neugasse 19) , unique facade design of architectural and architectural value.

The cladding of the facade consists of hard stone facing bricks, glazed in different colors and in sintered stoneware slabs with frit painting. It was carried out by first-class artists in the Villeroy & Boch company in Mettlach. The material was certified as being guaranteed to be frost-proof.

Description: "Diana strides right in front of an oak, her spear raised to kill a wounded stag that was placed beneath her by dogs." (Source: File number D2506 of the Zwickau building files archive.) This is the cultural monument a four-story residential and commercial building that was built before 1850. In 1901, after several small renovations, a fundamental change took place with the installation of the "Dörffels standing beer hall". Unfortunately, there are no longer any noteworthy monuments inside the building, as there have been more or less extensive changes in the recent past. However, the facade with its mural from 1906, which is unique for Zwickau and the surrounding area, has remained unchanged. It consists of glazed hard stone facing bricks in various colors and sintered stoneware panels with frit painting, manufactured by the Villeroy & Boch company in Mettlach. The design probably comes from the Thiermann brothers. Shown is a hunting scene with Diana in the center. Particularly noteworthy is the wrought-iron flag holder, which fits very well into the facade.

The cultural monument is a four-storey tenement house with a shop fitting and a loft. It was built in 1907. The facade is characterized by cladding with white glaze bricks on the upper floors and a porphyry-colored, colored plaster on the ground floor area and on the bay window. This leans against a particularly beautifully designed gable with volutes, crowns and a relief depicting a swan. The decorative and dividing elements show typical Art Nouveau forms and motifs such as depictions of animals, angels and plants. The shop window and shop door are also framed by a round-arched cast stone element with floral ornamentation, as is the house entrance door.

Inside, stucco ceilings, apartment doors and banisters have been preserved. The monument value of the house results from the historical and artistic value as a well-preserved example of the construction period and the urban value as a building in the same design adjoining the corner building. Villa Wolf, later "Mokkabar"
Villa Wolf , later "Mokkabar"  Humboldtstrasse 14
(map)
1911 Significant neo-baroque building of importance for the cityscape, personal history as well as architectural history and architectural art.

Based on a closer architectural competition among several German architects selected by the client himself, this villa was created as a striking, singular building, with an angular floor plan, one-storey with a two-storey central round tower, completely developed attic and front terrace with a balustrade on which two sphinxes sit; all window openings designed as basket-arched windows with keystones, multi-leaf lattice-divided windows, facade with pilaster strips , completely clad with sandstone, base made of Postelwitz sandstone, arcades and terraces in front of the rotunda on the ground floor, balconies with wrought iron railings between sandstone posts, restrained, discreet facade decorations on the ground floor , distinctive dormers with crowns flanked by putti carrying fruit or flower baskets. The top is modeled on an overflowing fountain from which the water runs down over the dormers. The crowning of the tower is designed in a similar way - medallion with wreath and putti as well as a representation of flowing water, both wings mansard hipped roof with copper roofing, the tower with copper domed roof, guarded viewing platform and ox eyes. The villa is at the intersection of Humboldtstrasse, Georgenstrasse, Schumannstrasse and Reichenbacher Strasse. Originally located in a quiet and prime residential area directly at the Schwanenteichpark, the villa was created as the southern tip of a triangular block of houses over an idiosyncratic floor plan adapted to the location. While the basement contained only a small caretaker's apartment in addition to the housekeeping, cellar and storage rooms, the mezzanine floor and first floor were used for the representative living of its owner. The originally horticultural designed terrace with balustrade on the mezzanine floor and the floor plan structures with the centrally located oval living room on the mezzanine floor and the breakfast room on the first floor above are remarkable. Originally, the villa did not have a garden either, it was aligned with the opposite park (swan pond park), on the other hand the terrace was provided with a garden with trees. Today the villa has a decisive influence on this important intersection area through its design and location, which gives it great urban significance. Furthermore, the monument value results from the architectural significance, as an exemplary example of neo-baroque design language, the builder of the villa was the manufacturer Paul Wolf, who invented the safety pit lamp and produced it in Zwickau. The amount of attention the Zwickau villa aroused in the professional world immediately after its completion can be seen from a lavishly illustrated article that the Deutsche Bauzeitung in Berlin dedicated to the magnificent neo-baroque building on March 19, 1913. In it, above all, the “excellent grouping of the building sizes” is honored, “which echoes something like French models, but retains its full independence”. Despite a major renovation in 1960, combined with a conversion to a restaurant, essential room structures and the external architecture were largely preserved, although the original representative furnishings were lost, except for a few remains of the painting and some leaded glass windows. During the last major renovation work in the 1980s, the inside of the building was repeatedly tampered with, the exterior remained almost untouched.

Apartment building in semi-open development, part of a double dwelling (belonging to No. 18) Humboldtstrasse 16
(map)
1874 Architecturally striking plastered construction of architectural significance.

The rental house at Humboldtstrasse 16 in Zwickau is a cultural monument according to Section 2 Paragraph 1 of the SächsDSchG because of its architectural and urban significance (monument status), the preservation of which is of public interest (monument status).

The striking building, located at an important traffic junction between the train station and the old town, was built in 1874 based on a design by the architect Hugo Frey. It forms a twin house with Humboldtstrasse 18, which was built seven years earlier. The three-storey apartment building with a taller corner tower and hipped roof is a historicist residential building typical of the time it was built, showing a multitude of structuring and decorative elements that are primarily reminiscent of design motifs from the Italian Renaissance. This includes the rustication on the ground floor and the highlighting of the following floor as a bel étage. The facade is characterized by girdle and sill cornices, regularly arranged rectangular windows and pilaster structures. The lost balconies on the corner tower can probably be reconstructed again without great effort, especially since the old architectural drawings are available. A characteristic of historicism was the imitation of the styles of bygone eras, such as Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance, to name just a few. The historical significance of the object to be assessed here emerges from the testimony to historicism, especially the second half of the 19th century.

In addition, it also has an urban value. Together with the neighboring buildings, Humboldtstrasse 14 and Schumannstrasse 9 and 12, the corner building by the architect Frey leads to an unmistakable urban development history that has come about over time. There are no comparable building groups in Zwickau. In addition, the houses in the ensemble mentioned have a significant impact on the urban space and are visible from afar.

The public interest in conservation results from the fact that Humboldtstrasse 16 in Zwickau is recognized as a cultural monument by a broad group of experts; comparable objects have been inventoried in other federal states for some time, from the documentary value for the architectural style of historicism, from the authentic character and the weight of the reasons for protection mentioned. (LfD / 2016, Michael Müller.)

Three-storey plastered building with original facade design, ground floor plastered ashlar, belt cornice and window sill cornice, facade characterized by regularly arranged rectangular windows, which are emphasized on the first floor by horizontal window canopies, plastered ashlar and plaster grooves on the ground floor and 1st floor, four-storey corner projections with a flat tent roof, pilaster on the fourth floor , Balconies on corner projections not preserved, building closed by a hipped roof or saddle roof.

Tenement house (with equipment) in half-open development, part of a double tenement house (belonging to No. 16) Humboldtstrasse 18
(map)
1867 Architecturally striking plastered construction of architectural significance.

The apartment building originally had the same design as the neighboring house. Exterior description: three-story plastered building with 6 × 4 axes with four-story corner projections. The entrance to the house on the side is accessed by an outside staircase. Today the facade is simplified, whereby the cornice and window sill as well as the window frames and roofs have been preserved. The balconies on the corner risalit are also original, although the original lattice balustrades have been renewed. Parapets.

Interior fittings: original two-winged front door with skylight and decorative grating, single spiral staircase, original apartment door from the construction period on the ground floor, on the first floor Art Nouveau apartment door and wooden partition with lead glazing, glass inserts of the apartment door with Art Nouveau glass etchings (flower ornaments), wall cladding as well as with niche and pedestal Stucco ceiling, originally the room structure on the first floor was different - the corridor may not have been separated from the stairwell or there was a different separation than the current one. The single-leaf apartment entrance door with a large etched glass insert, which is still in its original form today, dates from around 1900 to 1905 and was later supplemented by the already mentioned partition with glass inserts with lead glazing. This partition wall represents an independent, high-quality craftsmanship that is also worthy of a monument. The windows in the stairwell also have Art Nouveau leaded glazing with floral ornaments from around 1905. In the apartment on the 1st floor there are remarkable features such as wooden wall and ceiling paneling, built-in wardrobes, original single and double-leaf doors with fittings, stucco ceilings, ornamental designs Parquet floors, lead glazing, a floor-to-ceiling corner tiled stove, toilet equipment (decorative tiles, mirror cabinet with marble shelf) as well as carved or artfully forged decorative elements can be found, which significantly shape the monument value of the house. The original doors and stucco ceilings have also been preserved in the apartment on the 2nd floor. Refurbishment in 1999.

Bathing establishment with original Art Nouveau furnishings (a building complex with the Schlobighaus, the former bathing and sanatorium of Dr. Samuel Friedrich Schlobig), surrounding green area and fencing Johannisstrasse 16
(map)
1866-1869 Richly structured complex in clinker brick construction with neo-Gothic facade, of great artistic and architectural significance, with remarkably well-preserved and high-quality interior - Art Nouveau (the remise, today Schlobigplatz 23, also belongs to the original inventory of the bathing and sanatorium, see there).

The construction of the Johannisbad ensemble begins in 1866/69 with the bathing and sanatorium of the doctor built according to plans by the Zwickau architect GL Möckel. Clunky. Möckel, influenced by the Hanover School, turned to neo-Gothic and brick construction at an early stage. With the Schlobighaus he created one of the first clinker brick facades of historicism in Saxony and thus an "incunable" for the countless subsequent buildings well into the 20th century. While the masonry on the “simple Gothic brick shell” of the Schlobighaus was not yet to the satisfaction of the architect due to ignorance of the “rational brickwork”, the facade of the Johannisbad, with its rich structure and its play of smooth, glazed and shaped clinker bricks, embodies the architectural and building material aspects High point of development. In 1890 the extension of the Schlobighaus towards Mulde began. On January 2, 1904, the new buildings of the municipal Johannisbad were opened to the public. The bathroom was designed by Kretzschmar, Zwickau's town planning officer. It is characteristic of him that he not only accepted what existed, but tried to perfect it with adequate means, without foregoing the greatest opportunities of the community, which was flourishing as a result of coal mining. In addition to the facade, he chose the centerpiece of the facility, the almost 1000 m² swimming pool, as the main bearer of the prestige claim. Only comparable to the church building, he designed it in the form of a three-story "gallery hall" all around. Like Möckel, he struggled to be as modern as possible when it came to dividing the space and the technical equipment. The bathing and sanatorium opened on September 14, 1869 and was available to the citizens of Zwickau for bathing in tubs and the like, as well as to sick people from abroad who could undergo a spa treatment. So there were also sick rooms on the upper floor. Irish-Roman baths, Russian steam baths, shower and shower baths, tub baths, spas and sand baths were administered. For this purpose, individual bath cells, a sudatorium, a frigidarium and a tepidarium were available. The doctors Dr. Schlobig and Dr. Braun are considered to be outstanding personalities in the western Saxon industrial area, whose work was particularly focused on public health. In terms of urban structure, size and architectural design, the Johannisbad is unprecedented in Saxony. In addition to this singularity, the particularly outstanding importance of the ensemble is based primarily on its structural-historical and scientific significance. With the two essential construction phases, the beginning and completion of the development of the Saxon clinker building are documented in a very small space. The bathroom was in operation until 1991 without any major interventions inside or outside. It has been preserved almost true to the original with all its facilities to the present day. After extensive renovation, it was reopened on May 5, 2000.

The cultural monument is a three-storey apartment building with a mezzanine floor and a passage, as well as a church building in the courtyard. Both were designed between 1884 and 1885 by the Zwickau architect August Otto and built under his direction. The well-structured, exceptionally richly decorated clinker brick facade of the front building is characterized by sandstone pilaster strips between each of the six window axes, which stand on the cornice and extend to the eaves and are provided with a chapter and base. The base shows the quarry stone masonry design typical of the time it was built and Kreisigstrasse. Renovation in 1998. The church was originally built as a “house of prayer for the congregation of the Episcopal Methodist Church in Zwickau i./S.”. The Zwickau master builder Robert Richter is responsible for the execution. In 1888 the two side galleries were installed according to designs by the Zwickau master builder Albin Queck. These side galleries with beautiful wrought iron railings are still in their original form today. The same goes for the stucco ceiling from the construction period and the interior doors. The building is characterized by a simple plastered facade with decorative and structuring elements typical of the period. The roof turret that dominates the building has unfortunately been lost in recent years. Refurbished in 2002.

Museum building with interior furnishings from the period of construction, green space, gardens and fencing, as well as archive and library with equipment Lessingstrasse 1
(map)
1914 architecturally sophisticated functional building, traditional architectural language of the early 20th century.

The construction of the museum building goes back to the design of the architect Richard Schiffner from Zittau, who emerged as the winner of the specially advertised public competition among the architects living in the Kingdom of Saxony. Construction began in April 1912, and the opening ceremony took place on April 23, 1914 in the presence of King Friedrich August of Saxony. The building extends along Lessingstrasse and is therefore part of the development on the edge of the former Schießanger. The center of the building is the central or dome building that rises in the extension of the axis of the Poetenweg. In front of this is a broad terrace porch with an ashlar railing, rich sculptor vases and large figural stone carving work above the main entrance. The dome itself is in the lower part in rich ashlar architecture with stone carving, the dome itself including the tower structure is made of reinforced concrete with a copper roof. Intermediate structures, kept simple, provide a connection to the two side structures, which are identical on the outside, as an extension of the central axis. The facades show stone architecture with carefully distributed jewelry in sculptural work and lively plastered areas through division. The hipped roofs are covered with monk-nun tiles. The dormers, all covers, gutters and downpipes are made of copper. The rear wing, enclosed by two courtyards and a garden, is positioned perpendicular to the front building. This part of the building is used to accommodate the collection of paintings, which is also reflected in the existing skylight system. Inside the large domed hall marble floors, wide marble staircases left and right to the side buildings, as well as marble settings with four heads and four vases in marble carving, marble fireplaces and door frames. Here also lead glass windows with the inscriptions: work, trade, music, religion, industry, mining, play, agriculture, arts and crafts and science. In addition, traditional representations of figural and floral art. At the same height as the dome hall floor lies the painting wing in the depth axis. The height of the three painting rooms is different. All three halls have ceiling lighting and skylights. The first painting room is divided into two equal halves by a covered corridor made of pillars. The skylights are arranged on the side. The second painting room is intended as the highest room for the larger paintings and is illuminated by a single large skylight. To the left and right of the second painting room there are small side buildings. The left contains the third small painting room, the right three business rooms. Building grouped around a central domed hall with various exhibition rooms with skylights, office rooms, archive rooms and the council school library, museum: inside the complete fixed building equipment from the time of construction such as: doors, staircases, parquet floors, glass windows, floors and stairs covered with marble slabs in the central one Dome hall, there still fluted pillars supporting the gallery, portrait busts and decorative vases on the gallery. The left wing is reserved for the various collections. The staircase from the domed hall is followed by a vestibule, which, with its cross vaults and other details, creates a mediaeval spatial impression that fits in with the arrangement of the church's antiquity collection. The four halls of the main floor, which were originally intended for the rock collection, are at the same height. A staircase leads from the third stone hall to the weapons hall. This is also kept in the medieval style. The richly painted beamed ceiling, stairs, window seats and architectural parts made of Franconian shell limestone, the windows with antique glazing, the staircases with spanned vaults and central pillars and pointed arch settings give the room an atmospheric character. A small staircase leads from the weapons hall to the basement. Here are the collection rooms that were originally intended for the ancient collection. There is also a mezzanine floor, which is very simply designed and was originally intended for the Robert Schumann honor. The right side wing is the library wing. The area between the domed hall and the reading hall is the book store. The book holdings in the two-storey iron book insert with adjustable book shelves are easily manageable thanks to the pillar openings. (Ratsschulbibliothek: storage rooms along the windows) The historical shelving system with spiral stairs was built as a library system, called "library system", implemented by Panzer Aktiengesellschaft Berlin N.20. (Shelf system with gallery and iron railing, display table, old seating from the time of construction as well as historical lamps, in the offices and in the reception wall paneling and corresponding lamps from the time of construction, work tables and shelves, historical chandeliers in the reading room and historical seating and reading room furnishings with all lamps preserved) The manuscript room located in the porch of the terrace is accessible from the library. Like the 3rd stone hall on the north-western end wall, the reading room is rounded out on the north-east end wall. It is fully equipped for the time of construction. In the middle of the reading room is a large horseshoe-shaped table with comfortable armchairs. The walls are covered with tall wood paneling and bookshelves. The original chandelier, the historical reading lamps and the rest of the historical furniture as well as the color scheme based on the original round off the harmonious overall appearance. A setting decorated with carvings serves as a gallery to connect with the two rooms on the upper floor, formerly used as a study, and also as a special entrance for the book gallery (today the city archive). To the south of the reading hall, separated only by a glass wall with a door, is the actual book counter. The exit of this room leads to a side staircase via which the library and archive area can be reached regardless of the museum's opening times. The basement originally housed packing and storage rooms, a laundry room, utility and coal cellar, room for heating and the caretaker's apartment. Today there are offices here. From June 1, 1925 to March 31, 1930, Dr. Hildebrand Gurlitt Museum Director.

1928 House committed to the new building in clinker mixed construction of architectural historical and urban significance, in very good original condition.

The cultural monument is a four-storey apartment building with a partially expanded attic. It was designed in 1927 by the master builder Martin Förster from Zwickau and built in 1928 under his direction. The construction work was incumbent on the Zwickau master builder Heinrich Köcher, who himself also acted as the building owner. The plaster facade is designed with great technical and design care. Every detail, whether the trapezoidal inward running, smoothly plastered window walls, the vertically structured lower cornice of the bay-like porch made of shaped stones, the pilaster strips on both sides of the windows on the porch and gable or the two reliefs made of shaped stones on the left and right of the window on the 2nd floor of the porch, last but not least, the window and front door design are equally important. In addition, there are numerous interior fittings that have been preserved from the construction period, such as porch doors, apartment entrance doors, banisters and lead-glazed staircase windows. Both in the choice of building materials and in the chosen design language, the design of the house is on the one hand still committed to traditional building concepts, on the other hand it is already oriented towards the ideals of "new building". The architectural concepts characteristic of the 20s of the 20th century have been creatively applied in the design of this house and, in their idiosyncratic composition, represent an example of unique singularity and originality of supraregional importance. Renovation 2000.

The cultural monument is a four-storey tenement house with a partially expanded attic and mezzanine floor. It was designed in 1909 by the Zwickau master builder Max Schäfer and built under his direction. The building is part of a group of houses uniformly designed by Max Schäfer. The plastered facades are characterized by decorative and subdividing elements typical of the period, such as cornices, plastered mirrors, bezels, parapet fillings and consoles, all of which are made of plaster. The brown wooden windows of different widths with their finely braced skylights are an important design element. However, the facade is particularly emphasized by the bay porch, which extends over two floors, includes two closed window axes, loggias (partly in half-timbered construction) and balconies with wooden parapets and rests on four solid consoles. A dwarf building on a trapezoidal floor plan rises above the two closed window axes, decorated with two relief representations typical of the period. Inside the house, the architecture and furnishings from the time of construction have been preserved, especially in the stairwell. There are original leaded glass windows, apartment entrance doors, banisters and ceiling paintings, renovation 1995.

1910 with shop, high-quality rendered building typical of the time and of architectural and urban value.

The cultural monument is a four-storey apartment building with a mezzanine floor and a partially expanded attic. It was designed in 1910 by the Zwickau architect M. Kinne. The Zwickau master builder Max Schäfer was responsible for the execution. The building is located in a prominent urban corner at the intersection of Poetenweg / Moritzstrasse. With its two neighboring buildings Moritzstraße 12 and Poetenweg 7 it forms a single design. The plastered facades are characterized by decorative and subdividing elements typical of the period, such as cornices, plastered mirrors, bezels, parapet fillings and consoles, all of which are made of plaster. The noble character of the clear vision is particularly underlined by the brown windows of different widths with their finely braced skylights. The corner design in the attic is unusual. Here, in a filigree manner, a fifth floor, which was atypical for the city of Zwickau at that time, is designed in a half-timbered construction. The corner tower that is otherwise common for such solutions is simply moved and now flanks the half-timbered upper floor on both sides. Underneath these two turrets there is an oriel porch extending over two floors. A third bay marks the outer right window axis at the transition to the neighboring building, in the stairwell tiles from Gebr. Lorenz Cementwarenfabrik Zwickau i. S., renovation 2003.

The cultural monument is a four-story apartment building with a loft, courtyard passage and shop. It was designed in 1907 by the Zwickau architect A. Henning in the style of Art Nouveau and built under his direction. The facade is characterized by decorative and subdividing elements typical of the period, such as decorative panels, window canopies, gable decorations and entire areas made of artificial stone. The central bay porch, which ends at the top in different heights and shapes, is of particular design importance. The windows in different shapes and sizes also have a decisive influence on the painterly graphic effect of the facade, particularly due to the originally existing fine spruing of the skylights. Construction elements such as apartment and room doors, stucco ceilings and stairwell with railings and leaded glass windows determine the monument value of the house. Renovation 2000.
