Monument "mining honor"
Monument "mining honor" Muldestrasse
(map)
1983 Representative monument with surrounding open space to commemorate the coal mining in the Zwickau area from 1348 to 1978, of local historical importance.

Monument "Bergbauehrung", a picture created in 1983 by Plauen sculptor Johannes Schulze, which is intended to commemorate the history of coal mining in Zwickau. Fluted compact concrete column, which supports a cube, on the four sides of which are reliefs. The entire work is intended to symbolically represent the "mighty mountains that weigh on the mining expansion". The reliefs deal with individual stages or events in mining history in Zwickau. The relief "The beginnings of medieval mining" in Zwickau, which was first mentioned in 1348, forms the beginning of the relief cycle. The second relief shows the beginning of mechanization and the hard work of the miners together. A powerful scene depicts a rearing horse, which is defeated by miners. The other miners are probably pushing a hunt. The third relief is dedicated to the dangers in mining. A collapsing shaft is shown. Miners desperately defend themselves against fate or help each other. The last relief symbolizes the "modern times and the last exit", ie the end of the coal mining in Zwickau. In addition to a group of figures of four miners who have their backs turned to the viewer and jointly support beams, three figures can be seen facing the viewer, one of which is an older miner who lowers his sleeve and thus represents the "end of the day" (the end of mining). The younger comrades standing next to him seem indecisive and doubtful. You see for the timid new beginning after the end of the coal mining in Zwickau. All four reliefs have the same basic design principles. They are framed by strong “stamps”, the upper end are the so-called caps (partly bursting tree trunks). The room is filled with groups of miners in different postures. The monument is without a doubt one of the most important works by the Plauen sculptor. This image can also be counted among the most artistically significant works in Zwickau's monument landscape. In addition to its supraregional artistic importance, the monument has an extraordinarily high urban historical importance due to its subject matter. The surrounding designed open space supports the effect of the monument and is therefore an integral part of the monument complex. (Source: plaques on the memorial. LfD / 2011)

The memorial is a reminder of a section that was extremely important for Zwickau's history and is therefore of great local historical importance. At the same time, the sculpture has an artistic value due to its artistic quality. (LfD / 2011).
