The list of natural monuments in Cottbus includes the natural monuments of the independent city of Cottbus in the state of Brandenburg .

There are 66 designated natural monuments in the urban area of Cottbus (as of 2015). These are predominantly single trees , avenues and rows of trees . Most of the objects were placed under the protection of natural monuments in March 1982 on the basis of the GDR's Nature Conservation Act by resolution of the city council. The official list of natural monuments is available from the environmental department of the Cottbus city administration.

The natural monument protection status is regulated in the Federal Nature Conservation Act (§ 28 BNatSchG) and in the Brandenburg Nature Conservation Act (§ 23 BbgNatSchG). On this basis, the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the City of Cottbus can issue statutory ordinances for the establishment of specific natural monuments. - Not to be confused with the status of a natural monument is the protection of trees through a communal tree protection statute . Such a statute, which generally applies to all trees of certain species and minimum trunk sizes in the interior area under building law , is also in Cottbus ( statutes for the protection of trees of the city of Cottbus ).

Historical background

Start of the planned construction of urban greenery in Cottbus in 1872

As the city of Cottbus developed into the economic, military and administrative center of Niederlausitz in the 19th century, the population rose steadily.

The various population groups “were looking for a relaxing balance in their sparse leisure time ... The city struggled, but couldn't keep up with its activities quickly enough. So the citizens took the scepter in their hands: 45 personalities joined the founding appeal of May 6th, 1872 "of the Cottbuser Beautification Association ", among them the then Mayor Leopold and Major General von Puttlitz. ... Almost all the oases in our city that we have come to love go back to the work of the Beautification Association and its successors. ... In 1925 the records end. The association was not active during the Nazi era, precise information is missing. "

“In the years of its activity,” the association “collected funds and money for the beautification of the city and participated in numerous urban measures for the design of the facilities. ... But the members also supported tree and shrub planting in numerous Cottbus streets. "

The beautification association had a major share in the design of the following facilities:

  • Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz (today Brandenburger Platz)
  • Luckauer Wall (the Pushkin promenade is located on the former Luckauer Wall)
  • Spremberger Wall
  • Triangle Dresdener / Bautzener Strasse
  • Friedrich-Ebert-Straße / Sielower Straße-beginning
  • Berlin Square
  • Karlstrasse to Nordfriedhof
  • Chestnuts in Ludwig-Leichhardt-Allee to the railway line
  • Spreedamm to Markgrafenmühle
  • Klosterplatz

"During the term of office of Lord Mayor Werner ... were created:

  • 1895–1899 the Goethepark
  • 1901 Elias Park
  • In 1902 Bonnaskenplatz and the castle grounds were laid out
  • 1903–1904 Neustädter Platz (eastern part of Brandenburger Platz)
  • In 1905, work was carried out on the Pushkin Promenade
  • In 1907 the plantings at Mühlgraben (Ostrower Damm) were created
  • In 1908 the facility at today's State Theater including the tree planting
  • 1909–1912 the Märkische Waldwiese was created in the forest park (Volkspark - Madlower Schluchten)

The plantings carried out in the years mentioned contain an abundance of the trees that are currently protected as natural monuments, they are therefore valuable statements about their age and history. "

Origin of the trees as a natural monument

On August 4, 1954, the People's Chamber passed the GDR's Nature Conservation Act .

In nature conservation practice in the 1950s and 1960s, the following tasks were in the foreground:

  • repeated processing of the districts' natural monuments lists, recording of existing natural monuments and participation in securing new ones;
  • Marking of the nature conservation objects with the "nature conservation owl"

Ulrich Winzer, the first nature conservation officer of the city of Cottbus, remembers this in his diary entries ... that one of his tasks was: "... to put particularly striking trees under protection by affixing nature conservation signs."

On February 1, 1961, the then city council approved the first list of natural monuments.

In March 1982, the city council of Cottbus adopted the list of natural monuments in the city area of Cottbus - individual trees, groups of trees, avenues . This was preceded by a proposal to the Kulturbund from 1978 and extensive mapping work, in particular by the district forester Manfred Rescher, the landscape architect Helmut Rippl and Dr. Elze.

In 1994, the environmental department of the city administration of Cottbus commissioned Karl-Heinz-Reiche to take stock of the trees protected as natural monuments. In 1995 he published the inventory and description of the trees in the report on natural monuments in Cottbus - individual trees, groups of trees, rows, avenues. He writes: “The ... repeated inventory showed that ... 12 years will not pass without a trace. ... Unfavorable site conditions (in some cases the number of trees has decreased in groups, rows, avenues), partial sealing of the soil, but also anthropogenic influences such as changes in the water supply or construction measures have often contributed to the acceleration of the damage process. By changing the urban space or the landscape, the environment of the natural monuments has partially changed. ... Its importance is based on the originality and the retrospective, contemporary witness of a checkered history, neighboring buildings have disappeared, new ones have been added. Some trees have 'migrated into the city'. "(City expansion incorporated)

Updated with the entries and exits, as well as precise location determination, this report forms the basis for the Wikipedia entry. (As of 2015)

The citizens' initiative “Natural Monument Oak and Green Area Linnéstraße” has owned the property including the English oak since the summer. .... Fellow campaigners, sponsors and building councilor Marietta Tzschoppe are invited to the festival. You need money, good nerves and a committed team, ”is how Siegrid Miatke sums up the long struggle for the oak in the Spremberger suburb. Along with Helga Leber and the couple Christine and Ulrich Siegert, she is one of the main initiators of the citizens' initiative. The breakthrough to the happy ending comes when resident and initiative member Sabine Offermann agrees to buy the property including the pedunculate oak for the citizens' initiative. ... In the purchase contract it is expressly stated that “the property is to be used exclusively as grassland for the preservation of the pedunculate oak natural monument and any kind of building is excluded. … The way to this happy ending was long…. It starts in the 1970s. When 40 garages are to be built, the then financial economist Miatke is still alone on the barricades. Successfully."

The Cottbus local history researcher Dora Liersch suspects that the magnificent copper beech was planted on Huttenplatz by Wilhelm Moritz Ruff. 'He came from a family of drapers,' she explains. In 1847 he bought the Vorwerk. 'That was 136 acres of land that he had designed according to his ideal as an art gardener,' reports Dora Liersch. The area was at the gates of the city at that time.
