Asteroid (253) Mathilde, recorded during the flyby of the
NEAR Shoemaker probe , June 27, 1997
The list of geological formations on (253) Mathilde contains all surface formations on the asteroid (253) Mathilde , which have been given a proper name by the Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature (WGPSN) of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The names were made in 2000.
crater
Until now, only craters on the asteroid have received proper names. The surface of (253) Mathilde is very dark with an albedo of 0.0436 (± 0.004), blacker than coal . Therefore, the craters were named after coal mining areas. The 1983 Concise Guide to World Coalfields of the International Energy Agency (IEA) of the OECD was used as the source for the names .
