Federal Minister for Special Tasks in Germany is the title for ministers without a portfolio . The federal ministers are appointed as required and have ministerial pension rights. This office can be held by several persons at the same time or there can be periods without such ministers. Often the head of the Federal Chancellery was also Federal Minister for special tasks. Since 1953 there have been 23 of these officials.

So far, a separate department has been created for a federal minister for special tasks : On July 13, 1964, Heinrich Krone became Federal Minister for Affairs of the Federal Defense Council .

With the reunification of the two German states on October 3, 1990, four members of the government and the President of the People's Chamber (most recently head of state) of the GDR were taken on as Federal Minister for special tasks in the cabinet . With one exception, they held office until January 1991.
