Interior ministers are or have been responsible for the internal affairs of the Federation or the Reich. The areas of responsibility include, for example, administration and internal security. Construction ministers deal with or dealt with the issues of the construction industry. Since 2017, both areas have been united in the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Home Affairs .
The provisional central power was the first Reich government in 1848/1849 as the executive branch of the emerging German Empire during the revolutionary period. In the North German Confederation (from 1867) there were no other supreme federal authorities apart from the Federal Chancellery and the Foreign Office . During the German Empire (from 1871 onwards) further imperial authorities were gradually spun off from the Chancellery. The Chancellery itself became the Reich Office of the Interior; therefore it should not be confused with the Reich Chancellery (from 1878).
Since the law on provisional imperial power in 1919, the highest heads of authorities have had the rank and title of minister.
