On December 16, 1991, the Turkish government, Suleyman Demirel, was the first to recognize the Uzbek government of Islom Karimov and established diplomatic relations with it on March 4, 1992. On April 25, 1992, the Turkish ambassador in Tashkent was accredited. On April 28, 1992, Islom Karimov and Suleyman Demirel opened the embassy in Tashkent .
