On December 16, 1991, the Turkish government was the first to recognize the Turkmen government. On February 29, 1992, the two governments established diplomatic relations. On March 26, 1992, Saparmyrat Nyýazow received Selçuk İncesu to receive his credentials. On May 2, 1992, Suleyman Demirel opened the embassy in Ashgabat .
