Chocolate production has a long tradition in Dresden. The first Jordan & Timaeus chocolate factory was established in Dresden-Neustadt in 1823. This company produced the first milk chocolate (using donkey milk) from 1839 . In the following years, other chocolate manufacturers began to produce in Dresden, e.g. B. the company Petzold & Aulhorn . This resulted in the establishment of further companies for the production of chocolate molds and chocolate machines, including the corresponding packaging machines, e.g. B. the machine factory JM Lehmann and the company Anton Reiche AG for the production of chocolate molds and sheet metal packaging. Some companies existed only for a short time, while others for a longer period of time, e.g. Some of them were active until they were destroyed in 1945. The VEB Dresdner confectionery factories Elbflorenz emerged after 1945 nationalization of the major chocolate factories (u. A. The company Hartwig & Vogel ) and went into liquidation in 1990, so that currently no major company in this industry longer exists.

When the Association of German Chocolate Manufacturers was founded in Frankfurt a. M. 20 companies represented, 5 of them from Dresden. Chairpersons were u. a. Otto Rüger and Heinrich Vogel.
