Lorenz Huebner

Lorenz Hübner (born August 2, 1751 in Donauwörth ; † February 9, 1807 in Munich ) was a Catholic enlightener , journalist and translator.

life and work

After attending the Jesuit grammar school in Amberg , he joined the Society of Jesus in 1768 and was a member of this order until its abolition in 1773. From 1770 to 1773 he studied philosophy ( doctorate ) at the University of Ingolstadt . From 1772 to 1773 he also studied theology and from 1774 jurisprudence. After completing all of his studies Hübner 1774 under Prince Bishop Ludwig Joseph von Welden in Freising Cathedral for ordained priests .

From 1775 Hübner worked as a teacher for French and Italian, from 1776 as a professor for moral philosophy at the electoral grammar school in Burghausen . In 1779 he took over the editing of the " Münchner Staatszeitung " and the "Münchner Scholars Beytrag". Under the pressure of the censorship regulations tightened by Elector Karl Theodor , he left Munich and went to Salzburg in 1784 to the court of the enlightened Prince Archbishop Hieronymus von Colloredo . With the “ Salzburg Intelligence Journal ” published in Salzburg from 1785 to 1799 , Hübner created a medium of enlightenment thinking that was also important beyond the national borders.

After the death of Elector Karl Theodor Huebner returned to Munich in 1799, where he at the instigation of Count Anton Clemens of Toerring-Seefeld (1725-1812) in the same year as an associate member, in 1801 as a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences added has been.

Lorenz Huebner's grave is located in the Old Southern Cemetery in Munich. The original grave slab on the north side of St. Stephen's Church is now missing.

Honors

The Hübnergasse in the Salzburg district of Riedenburg was named after him.
