Lothar Rohde

Lothar Rohde (born October 4, 1906 in Leverkusen , † July 25, 1985 in Munich ) was a German high-frequency technician and industrialist.

Life

Lothar Rohde was born in April 1906 as the son of Albert Rohde (1873-1946) and his wife Sibille Helene Kahn (1873-1954). His mother was of Jewish faith and came from a merchant family. Albert Rohde was a chemist at Bayer AG in Leverkusen and in his spare time a musician and radio amateur at the Cologne Radio Club.

After graduating from secondary school in Leverkusen in 1924, Rohde studied physics in Cologne and Jena from 1926. In 1931 he was in Abraham Esau at the Physics Institute of the University of Jena with a thesis on gas discharges at very high frequencies to Dr. phil. nat. PhD. He then worked for Siemens & Halske and AEG . In 1933 he and his college friend Hermann Schwarz founded the physical-technical development laboratory Dr. Rohde and Dr. Black in Munich.

Lothar Rohde was arrested on September 9, 1944 for his radio activities with England and threatened with the death penalty. He was initially imprisoned in the Reich Security Main Office and was then transferred to the Groß-Rosen concentration camp. There he led a project on agent radios on behalf of the SS . One of his employees was Hans Ferdinand Mayer . Eventually Rohde was sent to the Dachau concentration camp . He was able to free himself in an adventurous way on April 26, 1945.

Rohde was one of the pioneers of VHF broadcasting in Germany . Together with Prof. hc Dr.-Ing. Werner Nestel , he created the first two VHF broadcasting stations in Europe for the Northwest German Broadcasting in Hanover and the Bavarian Broadcasting in Munich-Freimann. According to an agreement between Nestel and Rohde, the official start of VHF broadcasting in Germany was set for March 1, 1949. On February 27, 1949, Rohde called a BR engineer he knew to ask whether he could switch on the transmitter on the evening of February 28. Mr. Friedrich M. Zaekel, chief engineer of the BR, was still in Switzerland, but was already on the way back with the intention of meeting the engineer at the transmitter. Rohde found out about this meeting from the engineer and welcomed Zaekel with an American camera team to the successful start of the VHF radio. Nestel and the NWDR went on the air a few hours later on March 1, 1949 as planned. When a reporter later asked why he had not kept the agreement, he replied that he saw the whole thing as something sporty and that the entire development department at Rohde & Schwarz had worked 60 hours a week on this transmitter.

In 1984 he was made an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He is the father of Ulrich Rohde .

Services

The amount of technical publications and patents from his pen is immense. His ideas gave, among other things, significant impetus for the invention of the quartz clock and automatic weather satellite reception. Rohde & Schwarz manufactured the first German series VHF radio, which for the time had an astonishing sound and reception quality.

The company or brand Rohde & Schwarz has become a household name for high-quality measuring instruments and high-frequency technology around the world.
