Louis Prosper Gachard (born March 12, 1800 in Paris , † December 24, 1885 in Brussels ) was a Belgian state archivist and historian . He was the initiator and secretary of the Commission Royale d'Histoire, founded in 1834, and in the organization of the Belgian archives.

Gachard was originally a typesetter , moved from France to Belgium, completed his education as a municipal official in Tournai through linguistic and historical studies, and in 1826 became deputy archivist of the State Archives in Brussels, and in 1831 archivist of the Belgian State Archives. From 1842 he was a member of the Belgian Academy of Sciences . The organization of the Belgian archives by Gachard should ultimately become the starting point of a modern archive administration in Europe. The Belgian archives became a model. All reorganizations of the state archives in the 19th century ultimately go back to this.

He has published extensive collections of sources and numerous archival reports - especially on the history of Belgium, the Netherlands and the 16th century. Emperor Charles V and King Philip II had a special meaning . a. in the " Biographie Nationale de Belgique " an article about the emperor, which would correspond to the size of a volume of several hundred pages. The basis for this was his source collections, etc. a. in Brussels as well as in Simancas in Spain and in the Escorial in Madrid .
