The Nordic Combined World Cup season 1988/89 began on December 17, 1988 in Saalfelden, Austria and ended on March 25, 1989 in Thunder Bay, Canada . The Nordic World Ski Championships took place in Lahti from February 17 to 26, 1989 .
As two years earlier, the World Cup was decided in nine World Cup races. With his three wins as well as a second and third place respectively, the Norwegian Trond-Arne Bredesen was in the lead in the end. In addition, the brothers Trond Einar Elden and Bård Jørgen Elden, also from Norway , were able to convince with two and one World Cup victories. While Trond One was able to celebrate successes in the following years, it remained for Bård Jørgen with this one World Cup victory. Knut Tore Apeland also achieved his first success.
For the German-speaking combiners, the Swiss Hippolyt Kempf was able to win two World Cups and finally came third in the overall standings behind Klaus Sulzenbacher from Austria. With his second place in Breitenwang Stanisław Ustupski was able to get the first podium for Poland in the history of the World Cup.
