Lovers Rock was largely produced by Sade Adu and Mike Pela. Stuart Matthewman, Paul Denman and Andrew Hale assisted with the songwriting . Guest contributions by other musicians are not included on the album.

In the United Kingdom, the sound carrier debuted at number 18, which is also its highest position in the British charts. In Germany, Lovers Rock rose to number 4 in the German charts on November 27, 2000. The album stayed in the German charts for a total of 25 weeks. Furthermore, the album reached u. a. Top five in the charts in Sweden, France, Italy and Norway.
