Lucky Star ( Japanese ら き ☆ す た , Raki ☆ Suta ) is a manga series by Kagami Yoshimizu . The Yonkoma manga was implemented as a 24-part anime television series in 2007 . The focus of the plot are four girls and their lives. You are at the beginning of the series in the first year of Kasukabe High School and switch to the second and third year as the story progresses.

action

The focus of Lucky Star is the student Konata Izumi and her school friends Kagami and Tsukasa Hiiragi and Miyuki. The series shows the regular school life, which is accompanied by numerous conversations about all sorts of things, which are often interpreted ambiguously and highlight the special features of the characters. For example, Konata thinks about which side to properly eat a filled croissant from.

Characters

Cosplay of the character Konata Izumi
Cosplay from Tsukasa and Kagami Hiiragi
Konata Izumi ( 泉 こ な た , Izumi Konata )
Konata is a very big fan of anime, dōjinshi and video games (including eroge ). Aside from matters relating to this hobby, she is very lazy, e.g. B. no homework of your own and only learns the night before before exams. However, she is very athletic, but does not go to a sports club or the like, otherwise she would miss her favorite anime. She is comparatively small for her age and still fits into her primary school supplies. Otherwise she is cheeky and bright and often mixes reality with her imagination.
Kagami Hiiragi ( 柊 か が み , Hiiragi Kagami )
She is the older twin sister of Tsukasa. In contrast to Konata and Tsukasa, she learns a lot for school, does her homework early, so she always gets good grades. This is why she is often asked for her help by her sister and especially by Konata, which Kagami acknowledges with an instruction, but then helps her. If she is otherwise very rational, Konata can drive her to white heat. Konata describes her as Tsundere . She is constantly struggling with her weight, but you can't tell by looking.
Tsukasa Hiiragi ( 柊 つ か さ , Hiiragi Tsukasa )
Tsukasa is the younger twin sister of Kagami. She is very nice and childlike, but her weakness is that she is often very clumsy. She has great difficulties both in school and in sports. She sleeps often and a lot.
Miyuki Takara ( 高 良 み ゆ き , Takara Miyuki )
Miyuki comes from a wealthy family, is extremely polite, and has very good manners. Due to their above-average general education, the three other girls often let her explain something to them. Because of her Moe properties, she is often the victim of Konata's jokes. She seems to be very shy because of her intelligence and is a little hypochondriac. She has a close relationship with her mother, who shows up more like her older sister, is afraid of the dentist and is often very distracted, so that she misses her stop while reading on the train, for example.
Yui Narumi ( 成 実 ゆ い , Narumi Yui )
Yui is Konata's cousin and works as a traffic cop. Even when she is an adult and already married, she often acts quite childishly. Her husband works abroad and so she often feels a little lonely and therefore visits Konata regularly. Despite her job, she is a ruthless driver.
Yutaka Kobayakawa ( 小早川 ゆ た か , Kobayakawa Yutaka )
Yutaka, or Yu-chan for short, is Yui's younger sister and is just as small as Konata. She later goes to Konata's school and therefore lives with her in her house. She is shy and warm-hearted, but also brings some childish naivety with her. Because of her weak constitution, she often missed school in the past, which is why the change to Konata's school is a new start for her.

Creation and publication

Manga

The comic strips in Japan have been published monthly in the video game and manga magazine Comptiq since December 10, 2003 (issue 1/2004) . The manga was also published irregularly in the magazines Shōnen Ace , Newtype , Comp Ace , Dragon Magazine , Mobile Newtype , 4-Koma Nano Ace and Kadokawa Hotline , all of which are published by the same publisher ( Kadokawa Shoten ). The Kadokawa-Shoten-Verlag has published the comic strips previously published in magazines in anthologies since January 2005. So far (as of June 2015) 10 volumes have been published.

From July 2009 to May 2011, 8 volumes in English were published by Bandai Entertainment. The manga series also appears in South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Anime

In the animation studio Kyōto Animation , an anime television series was created based on the comic strips, which comprises 24 episodes each lasting around 24 minutes. Yutaka Yamamoto initially directed, with Lucky Star being his first series for which he had overall responsibility. After four episodes, however, he was released from this task "because he has not yet reached the level of a director" and replaced by Yasuhiro Takemoto .

Since the anime is based on comic strips without a continuous storyline, it also works without a consistent storyline, but consists of several short scenes. Shortly before the end of each episode there is the so-called Lucky Channel . This part of the series is a parody of fan clubs .

The anime aired on over 15 regional TV channels on Japanese television from April 2007 at midnight. The first broadcast of the 24 episodes, which ran from April 9 (and thus on the previous TV day ), took place on Chiba TV , an hour and a half later on TV Saitama and again just under an hour later on Kumamoto Hōsō . More than a dozen other stations started broadcasting within the April month. Since June 2007, the series has also been on a total of twelve DVDs, each in a regular version and a limited edition.

Characteristics of the anime

At the end of the plot of each episode, the Lucky Channel was inserted. The presenter Akira Kogami appears in these short side stories, which were modeled on a small moderated program. She considers herself a star and is accordingly bold, which is why she reacts extremely annoyed to any criticism. Her co-moderator is Minoru Shiraishi, who always has to deal with Akira's aggressiveness and generally just does everything wrong in her eyes.

Instead of end credits in the usual sense, the main characters gathered for a karaoke round which took place behind closed doors, so that only the singing and the conversations could be heard. From the 13th episode, the karaoke will be replaced with a show by the producer.

In the credits of the first episodes, a song is sung by the main characters in a karaoke bar. In the remaining episodes, the credits are real film recordings in which a voice actor sings a song or performs a parody.

musical

In the April issue of Comp Ace magazine it was announced that Lucky Star would be adapted as a musical with a new plot. The Lucky Star On Stage screenings are scheduled to take place from September 20-30, 2012 at the G-Rosso Theater in Tokyo.

reception

The first five volumes of the manga sold more than 2 million copies by September 2008.

In particular, the television series Kannagi , produced by director Yutaka Yamamoto , made several allusions to Lucky Star . So he appeared as a fictional character in the 5th episode and alluded to his expulsion from Kyōto Animation . In the tenth episode of Kannagi , which dealt exclusively with karaoke , the karaoke interludes that could only be heard behind a closed door in the credits of Lucky Star were parodied several times . Initially only indicated by the same scene design, Jin Mikuriya finally confuses the room door and finds himself in room 301 between the main characters from Lucky Star .

Kannagi isn't the only anime that contains allusions to or parodies of Lucky Star . In the first OVA by Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei, several works by Kyōto Animation were touted as "Japan's figurehead" and, in addition to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya , Lucky Star was repeatedly alluded to in poor quality because it was supposed to be a forgery.

The Washinomiya Shrine as shown in the series opening credits

The August 2007 issue of Newtype magazine published an article on the real places in the west of Saitama Prefecture that were depicted in the anime, such as Konata's house in Satte , Tsukasa and Kagami Hiiragi's house in Washimiya ( incorporated into Kuki in 2010 ) and the school in Kasukabe , including how to get to these locations from Akihabara otaku stronghold . The Washinomiya Shrine , one of the oldest shrines in Kantō , where the Hiiragi sisters work as miko in the anime , had a particularly large influx . The “pilgrim” otaku hung up Ema with statements / prayers like “Konata is my wife.” ( こ な た は オ レ の 嫁。 ア ハ ッ ッ 、 ア ハ ッ 、 ア ハ ッ… , Konata was Ore no Yome. Aha, aha, aha… ). During the New Year's shrine visits ( hatsumōde ), 300,000 people visited the shrine in 2007, 170,000 more than in the previous year. The 2008 New Year's visits increased the number by an additional 120,000 to 420,000, making it the second most visited in the prefecture after Hikawa Shrine . Across the prefecture, visits to New Year's shrines and temples rose by just 10 percent by comparison. The annual parade of the shrine in September - the Hajisai ( 土師祭 ) - used the shrine in 2008 a mikoshi with Lucky Star -Thematik. The seats of the 115 people who are necessary to carry this 1.80 m high, 1.60 m wide and 130 kg heavy mikoshi were filled within three days with volunteers even from the distant prefectures of Hiroshima and Miyagi .

Takeshi Okamoto of Hokkaido University also looked at the effects of the pilgrimages by anime fans. He saw this as a behavior similar to that for tourists, although the fans initially had little interest in communicating with other participants or in dealing with the religious backgrounds. Instead, the fans would hold more or less spontaneous meetings to visit the real locations that served as the backdrop for the fictional series. However, there would also be more cooperation between tourists and local residents.
