Luděk Brož (theologian)

Luděk Brož (born May 2, 1922 in Prague ; † August 20, 2003 ibid) was a Czech Protestant theologian , journalist , editor , translator , publisher , pastor of the Evangelical Church of the Bohemian Brothers and university professor.

Life

After graduating from high school in Prague-Vršovice (1941), he attended illegal theological courses organized by the Synodal Council (SR) of his church. At the same time, he worked temporarily as a deacon and religion teacher in Prague (1941-1942) and in Prague-Libeň (1943-1945). From 1945 to 1949 he studied theology at the Hus Evangelical Theological Faculty in Prague and at the University of Strasbourg . At the same time, he graduated from the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague . Here he dealt with the philology of Semitic languages ​​with Bedřich Hrozný .

From 1949 he worked as secretary of the Synodal Council of the Evangelical Church of the Bohemian Brethren for the training of lay workers and in youth work. In 1972 he was appointed assistant professor and headed their department. From 1976 until his retirement (March 1, 1990) he was a full professor here , and from 1988 to 1990 he was Dean of the Evangelical Theological Faculty of Comenius.

Brož was not only recognized as a teacher and researcher, but also impressed with his journalistic, journalistic, translation and organizational work. As a student he published the weekly Kostnické jiskry ("Konstanzer Funken") (1946–1949), in which he founded the Brothers Library and the Brothers School for Unity. In the following years he headed the magazine Bible a kalich (“Bible and Chalice”), the Bulletin of the Evangelical Church in Czechoslovakia (1954–1959) and the quarterly theological magazine of the Ecumenical Institute of the Evangelical Theological Faculty of Comenius “ Communio viatorum ” (1958 -1990). From 1969 to 1990 he was the responsible editor , later director of the Kalich publishing house of the Brothers Church. As an emeritus he published the topics "Metanoia" every quarter (since 1991) and in 1993/2002 his Czech version under the title "Czech Metanoia".

In connection with his work in the Christian Peace Conference (CFK) , Brož developed activities in development aid , in particular for the former French-speaking colonial states . Together with Andrej Ziak , he visited churches in 16 African countries in the spring of 1961. He invited them to come to the forthcoming first “ All-Christian Peace Assembly ” of the CFK in Prague.
