Ludolf I of Ratzeburg († March 29, 1250 in Wismar ) was Bishop of Ratzeburg from 1236 to 1250 . He is a saint .
Life
Ludolf probably came from Saxony and was a Premonstratensian . He is proven as a deacon in Ratzeburg in 1230/31 . When he was elected bishop in 1236, he held the office of Camerarius . In 1237 he confirmed the recently founded Benedictine monastery Rehna . His term of office was marked by arguments with Duke Albrecht of Saxony . Although the high pin after the deposition of Henry the Lion the Reichsunmittelbarkeit had attained, the Ludolfs predecessor Petrus in 1236 by Kaiser Friedrich II. It was confirmed raised the Saxon Herzog claims to the high pin. He demanded from the bishop the bailiwick over the land of Boitin , surrender of the castle Farchau and taxes of the church subjects. Ludolf resisted the Saxon claims, but had to flee to Johann I von Mecklenburg in 1247/48. He died in the Franciscan monastery in Wismar .
Saint
The Catholic Church honors Ludolf as a martyr who sacrificed his life for the rights and freedom of the Church. His canonization began in 1340, and canonization took place before 1384. According to the legend of the saint, he was captured and tortured by the Lübeck knight Erikin de Nemore, commissioned by Duke Albrecht, before he could escape and flee to Johann von Mecklenburg, where he died as a result of his imprisonment. His original memorial day is March 29, the day of his death. Today his liturgical commemoration in the Archdiocese of Hamburg will be celebrated on February 17th as a separate celebration together with that of the Ratzeburg bishops Evermod and Isfried .
