Ludwig Demling, around 1990.

Ludwig Demling (born August 4, 1921 in Munich ; † October 13, 1995 in Schlüsselfeld ) was a German internist specializing in gastroenterology . He held the chair for internal medicine and was director of the medical clinic and polyclinic at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg , which he expanded into a nationally leading and internationally recognized center. With a focus on gastroenterology, he was a globally recognized researcher, specialist author, university lecturer and clinic director who received numerous honors and awards.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1940, Ludwig Demling studied medicine at the universities of Würzburg , Berlin and Prague . He finished his studies in 1945 with a state examination and doctorate in Prague. In 1952 he completed his habilitation in Würzburg. In the following year he took over the provisional management of the Medical Polyclinic at the University of Würzburg. In 1954 he followed his clinical teacher, Norbert Henning , to the medical clinic and polyclinic of the University of Erlangen as senior physician . In 1959 Demling became an adjunct professor there.

In 1961 Demling became medical director of the medical clinic of the Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt municipal hospital. In 1964 he was re-qualified at the Medical Faculty of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . From 1966 until his retirement on September 30, 1986, he succeeded Norbert Henning in Erlangen, holder of the chair for internal medicine and director of the medical university clinic with polyclinic.

Demling and his employees developed a center for gastroenterological and hepatological basic and clinical research with an international reputation. Even after his retirement he was in demand as a member of numerous national and international scientific committees, as a medical expert and as an organizer, moderator and speaker for scientific events in his field. Numerous chief physicians and professors emerged from his school in Erlangen.

From his marriage to Elisabeth, b. Renner, has a son, the psychiatrist Joachim Heinrich Demling .

Research priorities

The main research areas were a. gastrointestinal hormones and motility, biotelemetry , ulcer disease , early detection and early treatment of cancer as well as the development and clinical testing of new endoscopic and sonographic techniques, which for the most part are considered pioneering achievements and are used worldwide today.

In addition to the development of methods for measuring blood flow in the liver and gastrointestinal tract, for non-invasive measurement of portal pressure , for the importance of secretin on the development of peptic ulcers, for the influence of gastrointestinal hormones on acid secretion and mucosal blood flow in the human stomach as well as telemetric examinations for gastric motility and hydrogen ion production are the development of new endoscopic and sonographic methods and devices for gastroenterological diagnostics and therapy:

  • Ultrasonography of the liver
  • Development of internal sonography (together with G. Rettenmaier from 1967)
  • Development and first application of the electro-hydro-thermal probe for endoscopic hemostasis in humans (together with P. Frühmorgen 1970–1973)
  • First endoscopic polypectomy of the stomach and upper colon (together with M. Classen and P. Deyhle 1971)
  • Enteroscopy - first total esophago-enteroscopy (together with M. Classen, H. Koch and P. Frühmorgen 1972)
  • Development of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) as a diagnostic method (from 1972)
  • First papillotomy with a non-specific diathermic snare (together with M. Classen June 1973)
  • Gastrointestinal hormones - basic research and clinical applications (together with W. Domschke, S. Domschke, SJ Konturek, E. Wünsch from 1975)
  • Development and first application of argon laser light for endoscopic hemostasis in humans (together with P. Frühmorgen 1975–1976)
  • Endoscopic stone fragmentation in the common bile duct using electrohydraulic shock waves (together with H. Koch 1976–1977)
  • Development, first endoscopic papillary splitting and stone removal with the Erlanger papillotome (together with M. Classen 1979)
  • Development of the mechanical lithotriptor (together with JF Riemann 1982)
  • First destruction of bile duct stones with a pulsed neodymium YAG laser (together with Ch. Ell 1986)
