Ludwig Mahnert

Ludwig Mahnert (born August 27, 1874 in Hamm , † July 17, 1943 in Innsbruck ) was a German - Austrian writer and Protestant clergyman .

Life

Born as the son of a factor and later editor, Mahnert studied Protestant theology in Halle and Bonn after attending grammar school . During his studies in Halle in 1892 he became a member of the Alemannia fraternity on the plow . In 1897 he worked as a private tutor in Wiesbaden . In 1898 and 1899 he passed his theological exams in Münster and then worked as a teacher in Lengerich until 1900 .

In 1900 he moved to Styria , where he was elected as personal vicar in Marburg with an official seat in Mahrenberg . After receiving citizenship, that election was confirmed in 1901 and he was inducted into office. In 1901 he became an honorary member of the Frankonia Graz fraternity . In 1903 he was elected pastor in Marburg. He was active in the Los-von-Rom movement and in the " national struggle" against the Slovenes . In 1913 he was in Vienna to Dr. theol. PhD . In 1913 he became the consensus deputy of the Styrian senior council .

He took part in the First World War as a field curate , with deployments on the Isonzo Front and in South Tyrol . In 1918 he was arrested after a speech he had given at the grave of an officer who was shot on Bloody Sunday in Marburg . He was released a week later and fled to Graz . There he took over substitute services at the Heilandskirche and lived in the Peggau rectory . In 1919 he became pastor in Mürzzuschlag . In 1923 he moved to Innsbruck , where he was appointed personal vicar, before he took over the second pastor's position in 1924 and later became the first pastor. He was known as a " German national " speaker, so he was a keynote speaker at the Burschentag of the German fraternity in Eisenach in 1927 and a speaker at a Festkommers in Berlin .

He was arrested in 1934 in the course of the July coup . However , he was refused admission to the NSDAP because of his church activities. In 1943 he retired.

His son was Klaus Mahnert .
